Pelvichromis Taeniatus Kienke (update)

All Pelvicachromis spp. develop what are called matriarch-patriarch families. The female dominates egg guarding and initial broodcare. In the wild, the male will attempt to guard multiple brooding females (i.e., a harem) though this behaviour isn't commonly observed in aquaria. It's a good sign that they've spawned when the female vanishes from view while the male roams the entire tank. When they're both out of sight, they're more likely to be bonding rather than brooding. Eventually the female lets the male get involved in broodcare, usually at the point where the fry are free-swimming.

cheers mate for the info checked water last nite and all ok while checking the other tanks found 3 pairs of bn with eggs/fry
might try and put half of a coconut shell in the tank is this a good idea or bad

cheers dane

Not long. It isn't difficult once you get the hang of it. Took me 15 minutes maybe? That includes me eating some of the coconut at the same time, and putting the rest in the fridge. Then you need to boil it for ten minutes or so to get out the worst of the tannins.

Neale

how long did it take to get all the cocnut out the shell

Well tonight the have spawned at last

they have dug under some slate and spawned on the roof

i watched the female lay a few eggs then let the male go and fertilise them and repeat this progress

will get some pics tomorrow of where they have spawned as i dont want to disturb them

lets see if its true about male female ratio with the ph, im using tap water at a ph of 7.8

Cheers Dane

Yeh it really is, when I bred kribs I raised like 25 and all were males.I've got a pH of 8. Good luck with it!
