Peat Moss

As long as it is the really cheap kind with no fertilizers added it works, it's what I use.
 
That depend on your filter. You can buy media bags if you like to spend money, I just use an old clean white sock.
 
thanks for the info, i guess ill be going out looking for some cheap peat moss tomorrow.
 
Dont use spaghnum peat though. buy proper peat moss. Soak it in a bucket of water for a week or so until the peat sinks, all the while draining off the water and replenishing with fresh. It will still do the job you want it for and wont pollute your tank as much with brown tannin. Place in a sock or the leg of ladies tights and place in your filter canister exactly like Tolak stated. If you really want to be ultra careful you can do as I do for using peat moss for killifish and that is to place clumps of peat in a sock/nylons and give it a blast in the microwave for a minute to steralise it.
Just a couple of extra ideas for you to consider.
