I have been reading one of my tropical fish books and it suggests that frozen peas are a good thing to feed fish. I was wondering whether anyone has done this? Can they be given straight from the freezer or should I defrost them first? It does say that I should take off the outer skin first. Also if I want to feed cucumber to the fish should I do any thing to it first to prepare it?

Any advice is appreciated :D

Depends on what kind of fish you have. Peas and cucumbers can be a little messy but cichlids love them as well as some others...it all depends on the fish. For the cucumber, just wash it good and cut it up some. For the peas, I'd suggest canned ones. Smash the peas up a little bit because most fish won't eat the shells but instead eat the insides of the pea.

For frozen peas, just cook a little, pop them out of their skins and chop or mush up. For cucumber I just hack off a chunk, peel it (cos of possible pesticides on the skin) weigh it down with a plant weight and chuck it in. Livebearers, cichlids, plecos all love it!

what i do once a fortnight is take say 5 peas from the freezer stick them in boiled water for a minute, squeze the shall off and mush them into the tank, all my fish go mad for them

I do pretty much the same as debaisir, boil briefly, cool off, take out of skin, squeeze it a bit and pop it in. Much loved by livebearers and cories alike. Don't seem to get any takers for my cucumber though, but they accept spinach (lightly boiled) as second best. Try to feed them veg at least once a week. The spinach is particularly satisfying as we grow that on our allotment; feels good to grow their food.

my fish love em, i just put some frozen ones in the microwave and then squeeze them into the tank, except i don't put the skins in.

I am glad I saw someone else who feeds can peas. I thought the frozen ones are to hard and to much trouble for me to deal with...When you have as many tanks as I do you sorta look for a easy way out of some things....

from what i've heard canned peas may not be great for your fish because they contain preservatives and sometimes sodium....

the easiest way i've found is boil a bunch of them...squeeze at least half out of the shell (discard shell - i find that when mashing them up the shell tends to get mashed too - but if you want to be safe you should de-shell all of them) and mash them up with other veggies of choice (romaine lettuce and cucumber, usually)...then freeze....anytime you need to feed break off a piece of the cube and drop it in your tank .... 10 mins of prepartion feeds my fishies veggies for a month :flex:

Good idea Abstract. I feed my fish peas once a week and my oto's get a peice of cucumber every 2 days. They love it. I just put the peas in the microwave for about 15 seconds, shell them and pop them in. For the fish that need them mashed up, I chop them into bite sized peices.

i think it all depends on the size of the fish, my black moor once swallowed one whole before it even got to the bottom and he was very young and small. i normally just take off the shell and twist the pea so it breaks in two i would not suggest boiling or microwaving as this reduces the amount of vitamins in the peas. (which is prob why you are doing it) for smaller fish just chop them smaller or mash them.

Yes, I fedd them to my angel but be CAREFULL ALLWAYS remove the shell as it can become stuck on the fishes eye so yes do but be careful :hyper:
