Hi, i have just bought 2 pearlscales and the one is acting very odd, i thought it was dead at one point , all it does is find a small corner and stay there , all the other fish are thriving and the water tests are ok , it looks a bit fatter than the rest and it also comes straight out to feed then has a swim around then go's back to a small corner. It doesn't look ill , i'm wandering if it's pregnant , are they livebearers or egglayers? spawners???

Is it in with only other fancies or normal tailed goldfish? It could be being picked on a little perhaps if the others are normal types. They are stronger and better swimmers, and more bold than fancies, so he may be getting pushed around a bit. Do you have any plants or hiding spaces in the tank where he can go to feel a bit safer and have his own space perhaps?

If the fish is looking a bit fat or swollen, it may be bloated. This can be caused by overfeeding or too many fresh or dry foods ( like fresh or dried bloodworm for example ) See if the fish will take some cooked crushed up pea. This often helps to flush the system and relieve bloating.

Hi it shares a tank with 3 other fancies in a 220L tank , i've been watching it since i put it in , it will come out for a swim and not care about the others i've fed it once since i've had it and it came out too feed no probs and was getting well stuck in , then it swam around with the others for a bit then straight back down to a corner, Yes i do have plenty of places where it can hide, but it's definately not ill and not being picked on , thats why i asked about pregnancy? Cheers Honey.

I see. Well if you haven't had them long I doubt it would be pregnancy, he/she could just be very docile . Just keep an eye on the fish, check for the usual signs of swimbladder an bloating. If it's feeding and swimming ok then it could just be a nervous/shy fish.

Hi honey , i think it's shyness thats all , i have watching it very carefully and i have found that as soon as the light go's off it comes out to play, i caught a photo of it earlier when i sprinkled a tiny amount of food in there to see if it would come out and guess what it came straight out , here's the piccy , Thanks Honey:
