Hi everyone,
I have my new tank all set up now, and i'd really love to see some pearling, but i dont really understand it completely.

I.E do all plants pearl? Or just some of them. I have a few anubias which definatly arent. I have some Myriophyllum and Ambulia which aren't (but have almost doubled in size), and a few other plants, riccia and java moss. I have some Hemianthus micranthemoides that SEEMS to be (providing its not just bubbles that are getting trapped there), but only a few bubbles. Also, the plants are only a couple of weeks in my tank (am i just being impatient?) . Some are cuttings, like the ambulia, and others like the anubias were potted.

A couple anubias from my old tank which were looking a bit sad have also shot out a new leaf since the new setup, previously I was lucky to get one leaf a month.

My Current setup is this:

56g tank (215l)
145w light (fluoro - 3 tubes came with the tank, two 30w 10000K, one 25w lowerK, and ive retrofitted another two 30w tubes as well.)
pH around 6.4 (been a bit bumpy with the co2 settling in, but seems stable now)
kH 40ppm (dH 2.3 i believe)
GH 80ppm

which I believe should give me a cO2 in the vicinity of 23ppm (my ph is a digital tester, but the kH test kits accuracy I can't vouch for)
Im using a DiY co2 system

Ferts im a bit unsure about, im not wanting to get as technical as using pmdd ( and sourcing everything here is Australia is a pain in the ***) and I cant afford seachem, so im using a generic brand aquarium plant food "aqua master" at a daily rate of 2.8ml. All it tells me is that its "phosphate free" and has NPK at a 2.6-0-5.0 ratio and chelates of Iron, copper, zinc manganeze and boron. I also dose a couple of drops of Red Sea "flora 24" which is their daily product to add bits that supposedly dissapear in 24 hours. All I know about this flora 24 is that it costs a fortune but I have used it in the past and seen an increase in plant health. Also I just believe that it might have some of the more exotic micronutrients that my macro plant food doesnt have.

Well, sorry for the long post, but maybe someone could look over this and help me get my plants pearling!
Many thanks!

-edit- Oh, and I used the Red Sea brand substrate additive as well. You add it after adding 2/3 of your substrate, then put the last bit of your substrate on.

Do you add CO2?

From what i understand people that get their plants to pearl have very high lighting, right now you have less than 2wpg

Putting your tank in direct sunlight will get whatever will pearl to pearl.

Doesnt 145W divided by 56 Gallons make 2.6WPG? I need to go back to maths class otherwise

So no ideas? Is the lighting really not high enough? I dont think I can physically fit any more fluoro tubes on top of the tank unless I start putting lights on the lights.....

As far as I am aware, I dont think pearling is only due to light. I initially ran my tank at 1.3 wpg, but with Co2, ferts and regular water changes the plants were pearling all the time. I now have nearer 2 wpg, but have not noticed a massive increase in pearling, which leads me to believe it is a combination of CO2 and ferts etc, and not just light levels. I also notice a huge increase in pearling when you add fresh water to the tank. :good:

Sweet, thanks for the reply fillet.
I wonder what I should try then. Maybe upping the ferts... And a water change never hurt anyone :)
Does anyone know what the 2.6-0-5.0 ratio really means? I.e If I add a ml of the plant food, how much NPK am i actually putting in....

Actually, I might start a new topic for this if anyone thinks it would be worthwhile, but does anyone have any ideas about how to dose with pre-made aquarium ferts?

I know there is always a dose on the bottle, but obviously that does not take into account the specific needs of your own aquarium. Not everyone has the inclination/time or in my case, brains to use the EI method, and also some of the stuff can be hard to source. I know in australia they are actually thinking about restricting access to the potassium nitrate in the same way they restrict some of the ammonia based fertilisers.

Any ideas? Is it worth dosing more than the reccomended dose? Are the really expensive ferts actually giving you any more than the generic ones?

Let me know if you think I should start a new post!

Cheers

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that for some reason everything is now pearling like crazy. Don't know if it was the water change the other day, or any number of other things, but I got home today and things are going along great guns! The fish are all out hunting for food, and when they peck at some algae on a plant leaf they get rewarded with a burst of bubbles in the face!

Im not really sure about my aquascape, I just think I might let the plants grow, then later do a strip down and reorganise everything with the larger mass of plant material. This being my first planted tank I wasn't sure what the plants would look like once they had grown. Who knows, I might even get brave enough to post a pic... im just a bit afraid of having my tank laughed at by the entire world!

:hyper:

Thanks to all who replied!
