What makes a plant start pearling?

Noticed mine are COVERED in bubble tonight after a water change earlier, never seen them with so many bubbles on them!

water changes do encourage pearling cos there's more CO2 in the water. Isn't it cool? Do you inject CO2 or not?

the thing to remember about pearling is that the water needs to be saturated with oxgyen for you to see it happening
This is why it can take a few hour of the lights being on for it to start

In a heavily stocked tank it might rarley happen at all :(

Well it's going crazy at the moment :D

There's almost as many bubbles coming up from the amazon sword as there are from the CO2.

Yes I added a second Nutrafin kit this weekend and this was the first water change since then.

me too!!!!

I added the two extra lights and reflectors today, just had a peek and there are bubbles flying upwards from all over the place...how cool!!!!

First time I've seen it happen...so it's quite exciting! (how dull am i  )

;)

get the pictures up then :)

I remember my first time (pearling) too - the post will be on here somewhere :)

Haha........cool post.........phew id say some of those ragged plants were happy.

Yeah first pearling is good alright, its definatly an achievement, you know at that stage you must be doing something right even if your not exactly sure what it is :) 3 or 4 nights on the trot and you have made definate progress.

I suspect the extra lights may have helped...I wasn't sure they had made so much difference when I put them in earlier today (that said, it was light in the room)...but I just turned the new ones off, only leaving the two Dennerle tubes on and it looked as though the tank was being lit by candlelight!!!

No digital camera I'm afraid, but they were still going when I went to bed which meant is was about 5 hours continuos. Actually looking forward to getting home from work just to see if it will happen again!

In the last couple of weeks I have:

Doubled the lighting in my tank to just over 2.5 WPG (Thanks to some DIY help from smithrc)
Added a Nutrafin CO2 kit
Added another Nutrafin CO2 kit when I realised one was too small
Changed the brand of plant food from Interpet to Nutrafin
Upped the dose of ferts

Still to do:

Try out the homebrew CO2 recipe recommended by gf225 (this weekend)
Add reflectors (this weekend)
Add more plants (early next week when Greenline delivers)
Awaiting delivery of Kent Grow / Fe / Nitro+ (middle of next week)
Think about trying EI out

I'm getting more excited by the plants than the fish at the moment... :look:
