well i started with 2 pearls but last satrday 1 jumped out of the tank and landed on the lid how he managed that i dont know as its a fully sealed lid  but no i ahve 1 male on its own does it need a mate or will it be alright there are other gourmies i ther but they are dwarf gourmies

It's actualy better to keep him alone than in a pair as, when you keep two, one will tend to chase around and stress the other. This can quickly lead to disease and subsequent death. It isn't as big a problem with pearls, but it's still not worth the risk.

Pearl gouramies are social fish (unlike most other gourami species) and do well in large groups. However, males are still territorial so a single male will enjoy a solitary life where he can claim territory. Gouramies do not 'pair up' so they do not require the company of one other fish of the opposite sex in the way that some cichlids do.
