i'm thinking of getting them for my tank. i want to get a pair, male and female, but i'm not sure i'll be able to tell them apart at the store and i'm not that confindent in the knowledge of those lfs workers as they couldn't even sex livebearers. so what if i get two males or two females, would that be a problem? and am i better off getting just one? do gouramis prefer to be in pairs, groups or alone? thanks

i know this is not a betta question but i really need help with this

male pearl gourami have red throat/breast and a pointed dorsal fin

Females have a rounded dorsal fin and very little red, if any, on their throats/breast

Hi aquarius :)

Pearl gouramis are one of the gouramis where there is a color difference between the males and females. Look at the ones in this thread:

While the male is more colorful, the females are more docile and IMO, just as lovely. I keep a tankful of female gouramis together with no problem. I also have a male pearl in my 55 gallon tank, with a male 3 spot and they bicker all the time.
