I have recently lost one fish (3 weeks ago), I dont want to lose another. I have a pearl danio which appears to have a squared off bottom that is swollen slightly and is pinky red in colour. Does anyone know what this could be ? The little fella doesnt look to be suffering or have any swimming issues ...

Thanks for any advice,
Dave.

Water stats would be good in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Can you get a pic up of the sick fish.
It sounds bacterial.

i have done a 5 in 1 test of the water and all readings are normal.

I will get a picture in the morning as the tank light has gone off for the night and my kid sleeps in that room.

Do you have any ideas what it could be ? Is there any chance that it could be about to lay eggs ?

Dave.

Them strip test kits are not that accurate, liquid test kits are the best.
Sorry thought you said it was male, so its a female.
The wolf the best on danio contact him through pm.

sorry I am new to fish keeping. How do I tell if its male or female. I have read that the males are smaller than the females, and the fish in question is the biggest of my danios (so a big assumption made).

Thanks for the advice I will contact the wolf.

Yes its around that area. It looks swollen (about 2mm), squared off kinda, and is pinkish in colour.

Never kept danio so couldn't say what it looked like if a female was carrying eggs.
Red inflamed anus can be dropsy to internal parasites.
The wolf your best bet he's the expert on danio's.

Thanks, I've pm'd the-wolf.

What would you suggest for dropsy?

Dropsy they look very swollen in the tummy region, and the scales stick out once its advanced.
Wouldn't think it was dropsy just yet.
Do a search till the wolf get in contact of female danio carrying eggs.

I havent had a response yet from the-wolf, so I will post an update here just in case anyone else has had this.

this morning the swollen area has gone back to normal (ish) size however it looks very red now but concentrated around a small bit which is sticking out slightly just next to the anus.

the fish does appear to be "gulping" more than the others as well.

I am considering using "Interpet Aquarium Treatment 9 - anti internal bacteria", is this stuff any good and does anyone have any suggestions for its use (120 ltr tank).

Please help I am really worried about this,
Dave.

Thanks to the postings on here and the PMs from the-wolf I can now relax a bit.

Thanks for all your help,
Dave.
