Came home from work today to find a poor Danio upside down behind the Fluval U4 filter, with none of it caudial fin left! I was already planning to move the Pearl Danio and Yellowtail Congo Tetra groups out of the 620T and into the Rio240 anyway, but this crisis brought this process forward. Prime suspects at the moment are the Yellowtails, as they have been getting aggressive with each other in recent weeks, causing nasty wounds on flanks which eventually killed two of them some weeks ago and now three others have similar looking wounds.

The injured danio has been pootling round the tank in the upper levels for several hours now, much slower than a normal Pearl, but it looks to be doing ok considering what has happened to it (even ate some Tetramin crisp earlier from the water surace). It now only has five very peaceful Filament Glassfish and eleven (hopefully!) Golden Kuhli Loaches for company.

No other fish in the tank were showing any fin damage, suggesting that I don't appear to have an aggressive outbreak of finrot.

I'm looking for any advice anyone can offer about how best to help this fish regrow its tail fin and eventually try and rejoin the other nine that went through to the 240l today.

Should I add any mediaction to the 620T water, such as Myxazin?
Should I perform small daily water changes, in the 10% ballpark?
Should I feed the injured fish some defrosted "live" food each day rather than Tetra Prima or Tetramin crisps, which presumably have higher protein levels, helping speedier reapirs?

I use stresscoat to heal fins, seems to work nicely. Never used myx so can't advise there.

And then I just follow the advice on the label.

Did you use this product to heal nipped fins, or completely missing fins (like my Pearl)?

A little earlier this gutsy fish was still pootling around the upper levels and happily ate some "Tropical Quintet" defrosted food, wagging it abdomen with no tail fin to get around!

Will do a small water change and then add some Myxazin this evening, to hopefully stop any bacterial infection at the caudial penduncle.

Whenever I get fish with injuries like that I always use extra water chances rather than medication unless the wound is infected. Brine shrimp & garlic is a great food to give poorly fish, helps boost their immune system :good:

it can heal,, one of my angels had its tail bitten off, it started to grown back.
but had to go back to LFS as it was fightig my other

How much garlic should I mix in with food, about 1:1 ratio?

I dont know the exact amount I buy it in the frozen blister packs. You can just soak normal brine shrimp or other foods in garlic juice, strain it and add it to the tank that way :good:

Small every other day water changes have worked for me for a number of similar situations.
Would perhaps consider fungus medication but only if condition worsened.
Should see new growth within three weeks IMHO.
I recently rescued a two inch Green Terror that was all tore up due to being housed with a breeding pair of Jewel cichlids at local fish store. They gave me the fish, which had no tail, and pectoral fins along with dorsal fin were near gone.
I took the fish home and placed it in a 20 gallon quarantine tank and changed approx 40 to 50 percent of the water every other day.
The fish is now, close to four inches long and you would not know to look at it, that it is the same fish.
No meds were needed for condition of fish improved quickly from mere water changes.I try to avoid medications when possible and shouold I have used meds along with the water changes, I would not have been able to suggest to other's what specifically brought relief to the fish. Many folks try several meds in combination and expierience poor results. If the fish improves,,they cannot tell what actually brought relief.
Clean water and lot's of it, will prevent bacterial and fungal infections in majority of cases.
I am not a fan of anything that claims to coat the fishes skin for it must then also coat the fishes gills, nostrils, making breathing more difficult or at least that is my position.
I only use medications when called for (clearly identified problem) rather than preventive measure .In clean enviornment,,the fishes immune system will provide more benefit's with regard to preventing conditon's from worsening.
Most medications in my view,,simply slow down the spread of bacteria, fungus, etc. It is the fishes immune system that heals the fish assuming enviornment is suitable for healing.
Opinions vary.
