I have had orange parrot cichlids for about three weeks. Within the last several days they have developed large areas of black on their bodies and also on their fins. Have seen a lot of conflicting advice about this on the internet- from possible black spot disease, to it being a normal benign condition specific to these parrot cichlids. Anyone have any good advice on steps I can take.

There are two Parrots, two clown loaches and three angel fish in a 30 gallon tank.

If you feed them very little for 3/4 days they should return to normal. It is due to an increase in the toxins in the water. ensure your filter is working ok and the temp is between the green marks on the therm. Good luck!

What are your water stats? Is your tank cycled? It may from high ammonia and be possible ammonia burn.

How often do you do water changes?

Need water stats as same as fishkies has said black patches can be ammonia burns that are healing.
Looks under black spot and black patches as it can be due to digging and fighting,.

2 out my 3 parrot cichlids have developed black patches then gone away, come back etc (this was when they were young however). If it just looks like their normal colouring I wouldn't be worried...However ime it can show up when they are stressed.
