Hi guys... I heard somebody mention before (think it was Wilder) that long, stringy white poo is a symptom of internal parasites. I've just seen something exactly matching that description hanging out of one of my platies.

She's eating and behaving normally for her - I've had her for a little over six months now and she's never been a particularly active or social fish, she just likes sitting around in the plants and biting the male when she gets sick of his attention. The one thing I've noticed is that her fry are small and don't grow particularly fast - I use them as feeders because they're not very pretty either. But that's just her, I don't think it's a sign of sickness.

Anyway, I thought this might be a problem so I thought I'd ask how to treat it. I live in a small country town in a remote part of australia. My fish medicines that I have or can buy basically extend to Melafix, a few instant-cycle products, clove oil, methlyene blue and whitespot remedy. The LFS is small and it's a pet shop, they don't carry a huge range of fish or fish products because most of the aquarium keepers in town sort of see an aquarium as a glorified piece of furniture, sort of like a TV but not as interesting. You know? Basically what I'm saying is that I don't have access to very many medicines at all, and there's a blanket ban on internet banking or I'd mail-order stuff. My parents are ott about it, it drives me nuts.

Is this parasites? Is it contagious? Is there anything I can do without access to proper medication? There's nothing wrong with the fish, but I'm scared that it will get worse.

It could be a internal parasite or bacteria. As she is behaving and eating normally and producing fry I wouldn't add any meds-I doubt any of the meds you can get would help anyway.
Best thing is to just provide her with good quality food and clean water. What food do you feed and what is your water change schedule? Spirulina flake and vegetable should be in their diet. Doing more water changes (40-50% per week) will help as well.

I feed them the odd vegetable, but they're mostly for the bristlenose. I'll see if I can get her to eat some. She's on good quality crushed flakes, I think spirulina is one of the ingredients but not the main one. I can't get any live food where I live, it's driving me crazy. My friend wants to try raising sea monkeys which are basically artemia so we were thinking about splitting the postage so I could get some artemia eggs.

I change 40% on Saturday and 15% on Wednesday or Thursday if it's looking mucky, the tank is heavily stocked so I'm careful to keep it spotless.
