I bought a used tank online with a filter,heater,4 fish, and a mixture of flourite/gravel. I added 20 lb of rinced gravel, and a piece of mopani driftwood bought from a pet store 3 years ago, that had been soaked for several months then sat dry unused for 2 years.Rinced before adding.

This tank had been set up and running when i bought it for over a year. It was very covered in algae and neglected. I didn't notice the white lines when i bought it - but that was probably because everything was covered in algae. The tank looked fine for a few days but very murky, then i noticed these moving lines on EVERYTHING.

I rinced everything - but the flourite/gravel was too hard to get clean. A friend speculates the parasites came from the gravel.

I own copper safe, aquarium salt, Jungle fungas tabs, and pima fix.

I want to add plants and more fish to my new tank! but am horrified to find out i already have a problem. What can i do to completely wipe out these things??? Before I add anything else to the tank!

Thanks so much.

I also have a potential hospital tank if need be. There are TONS of these little white moving lines - the gravel must be just full of them, i've got a good 4" of gravel at the back of the tank, and 2" at the front. I would imagine it will take a pretty strong dose of something to get rid of ALL these things. So if anyone thinks i should put the fish in a seperate tank...let me know!

Thanks.

Hey - Your biggest problems not the white strands, its your water chemicals. Your ammonia is high, mostly because its a new tank. I wouldnt worry about the white strands. Ammonia is LETHAL to your fish and will kill them.

They will explain what you should be doing.

You need to do regular small water changes. If you know how to do them great, if not read the atricle above on maintenance. Only you should be doing about 10-15% probably twice a day.

If you havent got a water test kit, get one, they only cost about £20 from your LFS, it will give you Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate and PH. I doubt the white stuff will kill the fish, but if you can get it out while doing the water changes great.

Read the second thread up there, its really important and if you follow it im sure you can save your fish. :good:
