What are symptoms of parasites? My betta has gotten VERY thin and his fins are definitely not what they used to be. It's not finrot and I've been doing pretty well with water changes. I add aquarium salt almost after every water change. Nothing seems to be doing it! So, I'm thinking he may have parasites. What's the best way to treat them?

Melafix or Bettafix (i recommend bettafix). Should get him normal again. Good luck.

If you do use melafix, use sparingly, bettas aren't tolerant of high doses.

Maybe it is a lack of nutrition... you could try giving him a variety of high quality foods if you don't already. Like, Hikari Betta Bio Gold one day, HBH Betta Bites the next ect...

He might just not be getting all he needs from his current food.

Try giving some peas for fibre too!

I think I give him quite a bit of variety. Two different kinds of pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms, and I have some frozen glassworms in the freezer.. but that didn't go over so well last time I tried it. I will try the pea thing though!

About how much melafix should I use for a one gallon tank and how often?

Thanks for the help :)

Posting a picture of the fish would be best. You'll get tons of guesses that are different, and that's not going to help much. Melafix is for healing, not treating parasites, IMHO. :) There's different meds for different types of parasites. If you don't have a digi, ask a buddy with a phone cam to come over and get the closest shot possible of the fish in good light. Good luck I hope all goes well.

I posted this picture not too long ago.

We assumed it was due to stress but now I think it's something else. Any more opinions?

That rules out age...he doesn't look like he has any type of parasites to me, but someone might have a better opinion?

In the meantime try some frozen bloodworms. He won't need a whole cube..just try around a fourth of it, then save the rest. Thaw them out in a cup or something of tank/bowl water (needs to be treated first if you use tap) and put small amounts in there with an eyedropper or your finger. I think that might help beef him up. Feed him twice a day.

I'll try that, thanks :good:

It sounds like your fish is getting a more varied diet than most bettas get, so I doubt it has anything to do with what you're feeding him. There aren't many clear signs of internal parasites, but losing weight for no apparent reason is one of them.

I've never had any personal experience with internal parasites, but Jungle's Internal Parasite Guard looks good, and would probably be best if used with their Anti-Parasite medicated food.

Good luck with your little guy. :)

I'm not sure what else it could be. I've tried Maracyn 2 but that didn't do anything. He's looked like this for awhile now. So hopefully parasite treatment will work. :)

I have no idea how to treat it. I'd have done what i always do is put some methylene blue in there usually works for anything that my fish get :/ nice treatment that is. And cheap for betta tank ;) Hope your lil one pulls through :)
