ive seen paradise fish on numerous occasions, and recently saw some gorgeous blue coloured ones in one of my local stores. im aware that they can be kept in unheated tanks and i remember reading that they were one of the first "tropical" fish to be kept in europe as they seemed quite happy in temprate waters and, so ive read, could even be wintered outdoors in a greenhouse. i diont intend keeping them outdoors though. what sort of set up would i need for a pair? i have a 10ltr bowl, would this do for a pair, or even a single fish? i read an article some years ago about keeping singles in one gallon brandy glasses with a few loating plants, changing the water every couple of days. i dont intend them for community, just as a display on their own.

No.
You would be looking at a tank of 5gals minimum for one male, a bit bigger for a pair because the male can be aggressive. Keeping them in tanks smaller than this with no heater is a bit cruel. Look foe a 5gal tank with a filter and a light, add some sand, rocks and plants a keep one male.

I do not recommend to keep this fish in anything smaller than 30 - 40 litres (60 cm tank is recommended as minimum). For this size it is recommended to keep only 1 male, as with age, these fish become increasingly agressive towards other males, and harrass females as well. Therefore, it is best to keep either 1 male with several females in a planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, or if you want to keep more than 1 male, then in a large group.

Although these fish are hardy, it is cruel to keep them in unheated tanks (in Europe or other temperate climates). For the size of tank that you have available, why don't you look for a betta? They also come in very nice colours, and if you like the paradise fish, you might want to look for a fighter betta instead of a 'fancy' one.
