Paradise Fish Jumped Out I Think

Ok..... long story short, my Paradise Fish that I just got two days ago apparently either jumped or was fished out by the cat (I suspect one cause I don't know where she would have enough room in the covered tank to stick her paw and she's never shown much interest other than drinking the filter water in the tank. Not to mention where it is now would make it unlikely that she'd jump on it). Anyways... I found the fish across the house from the tank, cat was playing with it (I suspect she found it on the floor... I know my cat and while she may not fish for fish in the tank, if it moves on the ground it might be a yummy insect).

I honestly thought it was dead. On a random whim and slight hope that maybe it twitched a little in my hand, I stuck it in the tank (this was yesterday late morning). Eventually it's gotten to the point of vast improvement (it was starting to float on its side and fighting doing so when I first put it in the tank). He even tries to fight with his reflection now and is eating fine. I really am still kinda amazed he's alive, it's like he died and came back (I was so sure there was no way he had survived I had resigned to just throwing him in the trash. It was on a slight feeling that maybe he twitched a litlte I even tried putting him in the tank).

But... I've noticed his tail fin while it had the v shape to a paradise fish before has the pointed parts disintegrated. At first I just thought the damaged parts disintigrated off (he can't have sustained no damage being a cat playtoy for who knows how long, not even sure how long he was out of the tank save how long it prolly took my cat to get him to my door). But, looking at him closer today I noticed the whole edge of his tail fin is black along with the edge of his bottom fin.

Is this just damage from the trauma yesterday that is likely to heal on its own? If not is there something I can do to help him so he doesn't survive massive trauma to get killed by something that ist aking advantage of his having a weakened state?

I'm posting this before I go to bed so at the moment don't know most of this but I'll fill in what I can.

Tank size: 20 gallons.
pH: Last I checked 7.6
ammonia: 0 last I checked but it's been long enough it's prollyu changed by now.
nitrite: ?
nitrate: ?
kH:
gH: 3
tank temp: 80

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): See long description

Volume and Frequency of water changes:
I strive for 1/4 everyt wo weeks.

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:
Just a Biowheel filter

Tank inhabitants:
Paradise Fish, Horseface Loach
Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):
Paradise Fish (I only have had him two days :( )

Exposure to chemicals:
None that I know of. Not sure if there was chemical residue on carpets he got batted across (I don't know if my cat batted him to my door or carried him in her mouth... I only saw him when he was at my door step across the house from the fish tank). I know that we've used a spot bot/mini wet vacuum on many areas on that carpet as well as Nature's Miracle (that probably does have residue on the carpet as you are not supposed to wipe it off but I'm not sure if he made it to that spot or was deposited before that spot). The nature's miracle also is on the spot where my (recently deceased, had cancer) cat was peeing on regularly and you can still smell some urine smell there so maybe also exposure to cat urine which I know has a lot of ammonia.

Glad he surived, usually can tell how long there been out of the tank if there slime coat was drying out.
The black edges to the fins could be ammnia burns that are healing.
Take a sample of your water to the lfs and tell them to write the readings down for you.
Maybe some melafix in the tank with the cat as cats carry bacteria in the mouth and claws.

Heh, thanks for the advice. I put some melafix in cause from what I can tell if it is anything it's fin rot (though I've been reading fin rot usually shows as white). I don't want him dieing of some stupid opportunistic thing when he managed to survive such trauma (I swear he came back from the dead).

Yeah, he was pretty dry when I found him (seriously, no slime coat). Only thing I found odd about him from a dead fish out of water was that he still had a lot of color (I've found dead fish have little color).

He's so far acting pretty fine.. just hte fins worry me (he's learning I give him food and where I give him food and is definitely a hungry little guy. Doesn't swim quite the same way as when I first got him but since I had him only two days before this happened that might have been him getting used to tank too... he'd swim in short spurts and stop suddenly where as now he's slower and doesn't suddenly stop so much.

He's got great markings (I pretty much saw himand knew that was the one I wanted.. good coloration, nice pattern of stripes, and he looked pretty active and healthy and little damage to fins unlike some in the tank).

How bad are the fins.
Well he has landed on the floor, is it a carpet or wood floor.
He could of winded himself or even damaged his swim bladder.

When my fish have damaged fins from jumps or attacks, I put some stress coat and a little bit of medication in the tank. He sounds like he's getting better. :) The fins should grow back after time. The black may have been from bad circulation of blood to his fins from being out in the air. Give him some time. My guppy had his fins mauled by my betta once after jumping into his tank and gave him some stress coat and meds. It's growing back slowly but smoothly. Good luck~!

Both actually (he was either carried by cat mouth or batted over the hardwood floor, carried/batted up the half flight of steps/ carried, batted over some carpet).. see why I'm amazed he's still alive?

When I originally put him in the tank he was starting to float sideways (but would fight it every time and right himself). He then ended up hanging at the bottom of the tank, and now he swims around seeming like nothing is wrong (it's been a few days as of now). I think those long fins that trail below him in front were damaged as I noticed they are shorter and he doesn't use them much if at all (He doesn't do sudden stops like the two days he was in the tank before this happened and I believe he was using that set to stop himself).

Besides those fins the other fins look fine (cept for the black lining). The tail is no longer forked (the forked part disintegrated, he looks to have a "trout" like tail now, though the edge is a bit raggedy.

I'm putting melafix in the tank per suggestion (and it says it helps with fin rot).

Yeah, he seems to be mostly fine (the fins seem to bother me more than him far as I can tell). He got stress coat soon as I put him back in. Actually per suggestion of a coworker (I work at a pet store) I took him out with the net for a few seconds and poured stress coat on him. He's now getting some melafix in the tank too (no hospital tank so I hope that isn't bad on the horseface loach but he's shown himself to be a pretty tough fish). I hope they do grow back, he had cool finnage.

Good luck, sounds like you are doing everything possible for him.

Heh, thanks.

Just occured to me, should I be putting stress coat in every day, every other day, or just that once when I put him back in the tank?

thats one tough fish goodluck :)

Yep yep. I think I'm going to claim I have the toughest fish around ;).

Talked to my manager (good guy, he's pretty knowledgeable) of the aquatics section in my store and he says that's the fins growing back (even mentioned they'll be opaque at first which I have noticed some opaque finnage now near the black area).

So, sounds like he's healing up well :). Still sticking in the melafix to help him along.
