Hi,

can anyone tell me if a paradise fish would be OK with a Redtailed Black shark and / or Firemouth Cichlids or Altolamprologus calvus. What are peoples opinion on these fine looking fish.

Leon

I really liked the Paradise fish but when i asked about putting one in with my shark/firemouth I was told no as they are aggressive - so i never bothered - let me know if you can cos i really want one

See the thing is, they have gotta be really aggressive if they want to take on a Redtailed BS or a Firemouth. See I'm sure they'd establish a pecking order, but I'm not sure, thats why I posted.

I am starting a new tank and these are the sort of Fishes I want.

I also think it depends on size of tank as to wether or not they will fight.

If the tank is big enough to establish territory then they might be Ok.

Keep watching this post and maybe someone will sort this out.

They get on brilliantly - no problems at all - but i've heard other people say they have them and they fight.
I got the RTBS first and it was probably about 2 inches and then a few weeks later i got the firemouth - again probably about 3 inches in length.
the RTBS is now about 6inches and the firemouth about 5 and they have no problems at all .
The tanks a 4footer with an angel , golden severum (he will be on his way to a new tank soonish) , rtbs , firemouth , 2 kribs , calvus , blue dolphin , bricchardi , electric yellow , a snowball plec and a bristlenose plec, and 3 clown loach - a right mixture but I have absolutely no problems at all.
I am overstocked but am over filtered as well - the plan is to move them to a number of new tanks in a tank room when i can get it finished off this summer

I've heard a lot of conflicting information on paradise fish from credible people, and have always wondered about their true temperament myself. If you look around the web you'll actually find credible sites that say they're acceptable community fish, but you'll also find info about how aggressive they can be. My personal conclusion has pretty much been that they're like a betta, only larger and able to do more damage - some of them can get along with other fish, but some won't tolerate the presence of other fish. I'm fairly certain that, like male bettas, you don't keep two paradise fish together. They're a one-per-tank kind of deal.

If you're thinking of putting a paradise fish in your community, do all the research you can find first. If a moderator doesn't move this thread there, you might also want to try posting in the Anabantoids section, as some of those folks might have experience with paradise fish (which are, not coincidentally, Anabantoids). ;)

pendragon!

i've had 2 paradise fish (male/female) in my community for months now with a RTBS and they completely stay away from each other although my RTBS is still relatively timid at 4".....the paradise fish are normally at the top and RTBS a bottom dweller....the only fish i ever see the RTBS go at it with are the green tiger barbs and my syno. eup.

Ive kept alot of paradise fish and they all have been very peacful. With just the rtbs you woudnt have problems beacuse they live at different depts of the tank. The Firemouth may pose problems due to the size difference that a Paradise fish just bought from lfs. If you would like to try you should let the paradise fish grow out in a differant tank or just keep a close eye on them and be ready to bring the paradise fish back or move him.

Was thinking of getting some paradise fish myself. Anyone ever kept paradise fish with congo tetras?

I figure that congos are big enough and quick enough to get away but worry if that finnage will tempt paradise fish.......hmmmm

Most of the reports I've read suggests that paradise fish are ok as long as you don't let them try to breed - which I'd say is similar advice to kribs!

We have 2 paradise fish - male & female, in a tank with Zebra Danios and Sunset Gouramis, a SAE and a couple of shrimps.

The Male Paradise fish has never really shown any interest in any other fish than the female - to start with he flared at everything (inc his own reflection :) ) but now he will occasionally chase her, but she hides and he goes on looking handsome.

However, we used to keep them in a Coldwater tank (being they can tolerate a wide temp range) with a couple of fantails, and he used to annoy and nip at them all the time. I think that the size of the fish they are in with are a big factor.

They are very pretty fish.
