One of my panda's is laying eggs on to one of my plants, this is the first time ive had anything lay eggs so im not sure what to do. Ive also got sometetras and they seem to be watching where shes laying the eggs, is there anything i can buy to keep the eggs and other fish away from each other?

hi webmonkeyuk
all i do is collect the egss and put them in a container wich i float in the tank there in, with an air stone dangling into it from the top old icecream containers are great for this.
you can even put the plants with the eggs on, just snap the leaves off were the eggs are.
thats all i do :good:

unfortunately id gone out to the pet shop for something and when i came back all the eggs had gone (bloody tetras!) anyway i found 1 remaining egg this morning in one of the plants. I never even thought to remove the eggs before i went out as i could of put them in a makeshift box  such a shame really as i didnt even plan on breeding them it just came out of the blue

never mind webmonkeyuk
at least ull know next time shouldent be 2 long before you see more eggs :good:

do they normally produce more eggs after the first batch? the only thing i can think that triggered them to mate was doing a water change on saturday. i would love to try and raise some

Hi webmonkeyuk :)

If your pandas have spawned for you, chances are good that they will do it again, perhaps on a regular basis. C. pandas only spawn a relatively few eggs at a time, but you might get them every few days, depending on how many of them you have. They are sometimes egg eaters and often like to hide them as well. Your best bet is to watch them for spawning behavior and see where they put them so you can gently remove then.

I've had good luck putting hang on the side, metal thermometers in their tank so they can spawn underneath them and the whole thing can be easily lifted out. I have pictures that might be helpful to you, but I'll have to look for them. I'll post them as soon as I find them.

In the meanwhile, keep your pandas well conditioned with nutritious food like bloodworms in their diet. You will also want to give some thought to where you will raise the fry and what you will feed them. They are no more difficult to raise than any other cory if you are prepared and know what to expect.

Good luck with them! :D

Hi webmonkeyuk,

Keep looking at your tank often just in case they lay somemore, my peppers have been laying from 3 to 15 nearly every day since 23rd sept. Im going to have to take either the male out or the female to give her chance to rest.

Above all listen to Inchworm she knows her stuff. Helped me out in the past with a Gourami spawn.

Thanks for the compliment, StrontiumDog! Now, gouramis are hard. Compared to them, raising any kind of cory is easy. :kana:

Here are the pictures I wanted to find for you, webmonkeyuk. The first shows how I had a C. panda tank set up with the thermometers to collect the eggs. It's worth a try, especially if you have other kinds of fish in the tank too. If they spawn overnight, you can simply lift the thermometer out in the morning and move them to a small tank where they can hatch and grow in safety.

This picture shows (from right to left) how they darken as they mature. The eggs on the right are fresh, while the eggs on the far left are about 4 days old and ready to hatch. The white fuzzy ones on it have gone to fungus.

It probably was the water change that got them to start spawning, especially if it was a bit on the cool side, but if you did not have healthy and well fed corys to begin with, it would not have happened at all. I hope you are still interested in raising them. If so, post back and we will help you learn what's needed to succeed. :D

so i did my weekly water change/clean lastnight i came down this morning to find shes been laying eges again :good: i got about 11 intotal i did manage to squash 2 when trying to get them out though, so ive put them in a little floating box which i got so do i just leave them now to do there stuff and hatch? they look like a brownie color inside so these are the fertilized ones?

congrats webmonkeyuk :good:
yeah if there brown then there fertile make sure you put an air stone dangling into the container to stop the eggs getting fungus.

Hi webmonkeyuk :)

Good for you! You can probably expect more on a regular basis too, so you'll want to think about where you'll move the fry to once they hatch and what you'll be feeding them. :D

well this batch have started to go furry so id say they wont hatch right?, like you guys said i need to get an airstone. I really dont have the room for any more if she keeps laying all the time so it might be a case of letting the tetras eat them in the future

right ive just had to bin another batch due to them going furry, ive got this for putting them into and ive also got a small airstone in the mini tank too but there still going furry. Most of them were just on the buttom of the mini tank because the eggs had lost there stickiness so that might of been the problem?

Hi webmonkeyuk :)

It will take some practice to successfully move the eggs. You have to get to them while they are still sticky, but not so quickly that they are soft and easily squished. If you get them just right you should be able to gently roll them off the glass (or other surface) and onto your finger then roll them onto the wall of your container.

It's a bit tricky to get this right, but well worth the effort. Please keep trying and you will succeed, I'm sure.
