can you keep a pair, or group (obviously only one male) of betta together? ive kept pairs in community tanks before with few problems, so long as the girl/s have somewhere to hide from the male if he gets a bit feistry with her. the last male i had seldom gave the girls any hassle, he would flare up at a new arival to let her know who is boss, but after than he would bearly give em a second glance unless they got to food before he did. is this usual? or was he an exception?

I honestly wouldn't suggest it. I have had my male with my little girls before and while he is fine, flares off and on but doesn't nip, that's pretty rare. Mine was a temporary arrangement anyway, but even if he doesn't do much to them he COULD do it suddenly out of nowhere. It's never really suggested or prefered. I use to feel kinda guilty making my betta males be by themselves, but mine love it, and they prefer it that way, I believe. As long as it isn't just some plain tank, give them some plants and object to play around. If nothing else keeping him with the girls can make them stressed, and they won't have as happy a life. Good luck!

Happy St. paddy's Day!

i would never, ever keep a male in with a group of females, they aren't guppies. i wouldn't even keep them in a community, but that's just my opinion. my one betta, shadow, was a quiet, shy little guy who was afraid of his own shadow (hence the name) when we got him, he even had a pet ghost shrimp  . the ghost shrimp passed on, like the other 6 we got (they were "feeder" quality) and now, he flares at every other fish he sees, i even tried to introduce another shrimp in his tank and he attacked it.

kind of a pointless story, but what i'm saying is even the sweetest betta can turn "mean".

so general rule of thumb, dont keep male betta with anything unless you are breeding them. oky day, just thought id ask. like i say i never had a problem with my old male, but he must have just been a big softie
