well as you know I have some juvinille discus one just over 3" and one which was stunted just slightly larger however they are starting to show signs of pairing up, ie swimming together and defending eachother.

is this just by chance or could it be the start of a pair forming?

if they are only 3" then no.... unless they are seriously stunted.

well only one is stunted so the other is just the age of a 3mth old, guess they just get on then. glad to hear I don't have to get them a tank as well just now

thanks i'm getting a pair next week so will be fun to see if they are actually a breeding pair and if i can keep the fry alive

You will need a new tank for them, atl east 20 gallons, 30 is better. It has to be bare bottom and maybe add a piece of slate or a breeding cone. I don't think you understand how much work it takes to raise fry. LOADS of water changes. 2X a day at least. If it was me raising fry I would probably rig a drip system. Not only that, you will have to get an R/O unit if your tap water is hard. Ph needs to be quite soft.

How much are you purchasing this so called pair for? Most pairs cost 300 or 400+ the pair at my local LFS is being sold for almost a grand.

I wish, haha the bully needs taught a lesson

When does pairing normally happen? Ive got 7 discus (ranging in size) and so far i dont think they have shown any signs of pairing up, the biggest three are about 6"

I've seen pairs as small as 4" before. Most start to pair after I believe 7 months, could be wrong.

With 7 Discus you have a good chance of getting a pair but it is never a guarantee. It could take years before they actually decide to pair and breed.

I've spare 3ft tanks for them, twice a day water changes isn't a problem as i'm doing that with my big tank anyway and I plan to keep it bare bottom as the planted tank I have is alot to keep up and two planted tanks would be a nightmare.

at the moment I have 11 discus between 2cm and 4inch.

if these adults don't breed I don't mind as i'm getting them cheap as it's a friend or a friend

Wish my discus had been cheap, spent a fortune on them but hoping some will pair off and make me some money :)

my discus are low quality, even the ones I got from the breeder were cross breeds. The outlay I don't mind and then any cash I get I from any of my fish i'll be putting towards increasing the quality of my discus. as I was new to discus keeping I didn't want to go spend a fortune on a fish for it to die a week later.

Well good luck then. You will probably need a 4ft grow out tank too if you wish to sell them to LFS, they will only take them at a certain size.

well looks like im getting a second pair as well, so i'll be keeping the rest of my tanks free for the baby discus and the angel, should really give up my breeding betas now
