I was given a fully stocked 30 gallon recently. Among the fish I have identified that there are 2 Bolivian Rams. I'm think they're both male.

If so do I need to trade one in? Do I wait and see if they start getting too aggressive with one another?
Is there a way to sex? I'm not really sure of their age. The tank was relatively new to the people who gave it to me.

Both the fish seem to have the spines that stick up on front of the comb. They both have spots on their sides. One's markings seem to have changed a little recently. I noticed the two spots on his/her side is looking more like a line. Like the dots are connecting a bit. Also the ring around his/her eyes are lighter or something. I just noticed it today really. Could be the water change/cleaning I did yesterday. Maybe that one is stressed out or something. I did rearrange his/her area of the tank.

As far as behavior, these two seem to get along ok. They wrestle around a bit but nothing gets out of hand.
They usually stay away from each other with just occasional chasings. I've seen them lock lips a couple of times but it isn't violent. They do like to steal algae wafers from each other.
They have seemed to each claim an area on the opposite sides of the tank. Although I put some driftwood in the tank last night and they both love it so much that they've decided to share it. One has taken up residence in the hollow underneath and the other has stationed himself behind it. They're practically shoulder to shoulder but seem to like it. They aren't really bugging each other about it.

Your 30G should be sufficient to hold both of them. Chances are that you have 2 males. From what I've seen, most LFS only carry the males.

I have 2 males in my 72G and their behavior is just as you described. Generally peacfeul with the occasional chasing/bumping... usually during feeding time.

Bolivians are pretty hard to sex - much more difficult than blue or gold rams. Even if you have 2 males, 30g should be plenty of room for them to be able to exist peacefully :) I had 2 in a 35g a while ago before I knew about sexing fish or stuff like that and there was *never* any problem.

You can do a google search for "sexing Bolivian Rams" or "sexing microgeophagus altispinosa" and you'll get some tips on how to tell the sexes apart :)
