I almost forgot about this!

My b/f & I went in search of a couple of Gouldian Finches, which are about $45 each here.

We went to this huge local place, which sold fish & birds. They had other rare finches which I was dying, and I mean, REALLY, REALLY dying to get, that nobody else has, as far as I know.

But, while waiting to be served, I had a quick look at the fish section. And there they were! Tiny little glass fish, I'd never seen them in person before, and to be honest, the dye look UGLY! It was all uneven and looked so fake.

So we walked out, as I refuse to spend money in any shop that actually sells mistreated animals, especially since the woman serving us knew what they were!
It was hard to walk out without the little birds I wanted, sniff!

I thought these fish were becoming a rare thing, due to the awareness of the public, or is Australia a backwards country?!

Manns Road Bird & Aquarium Supplies, West Gosford.

They also had these $500 parrots crammed into cages not fit for budgies, I just said to the woman, this is WEST GOSFORD, how long before you sell a $500 bird in this area?

I'm reporting them to the RSPCA, about the parrots & the poor fish.

yeah i know that place. i have been in there a couple of times and the fish always look unwell and not in the best condition. but i did get my budgie from there a few years ago and he is the best bird ever lol.

I'm glad I'm dobbing them in, in that case. Even Singapore has laws to protect fish against abuse.

It really sh*ts me, that the Coast has the highest rate of animal abuse/neglect in the country.

I ended up getting the finches from Erina, they are sooo beautiful. I'm glad your budgie turned out ok :D

They didn't have a great selection, but didn't feel like driving down to Brookvale to the really good bird shop. Will once we build an outdoor aviary.

And yes, we are, sad to say. Which reminds me, if you or anyone you know wants to help the RSPCA at Somersby, they are desperately out of kitty litter, & it's the start of kitten - dumping season :(

their not that exstinct.... i have one or had two sold to me before i knew about painted fish and now im thinking of taking action against that place if possible.... I know at least 3 pet places that either do dyed fish or just dyed glass fish .... im concerned for them.

What a@#holes!

But you have to think to yourself why it is that the RSPCA or anyone else does nothing about it. What's the point of laws if they're not enforced?

Australia's the worst, if tail docking is banned in one state, you just drive across the border, chop your puppie's tail off, and drive back, and the law can't touch you!

I think you should definately take action. If the UK can ban fox hunting, they can ban fish dyeing :D

I have seen some painted glassfish over here in Adelaide, in one shop only. My regular LFS has a sign saying they do not sell dyed fish nor hybrids cichlids. It's good that you did not support them from purchasing, did you tell them that its horrific?

Well, I didn't bother arguing with the lady behind the counter, just said why I'm not buying anything from them, and sent a letter to the manager & RSPCA.

Even good lfs get the occasional painted fish mixed in with their normal ones, which is quite different to purpusefully stocking them.

I'm going to try & arrange something with the local RSPCA, so that shops which don't stock painted fish get recognition, sort of an RSPCA stamp of approval, like they do with eggs.

Painted Angels are pretty common around here in melbourne, i refuse to buy fish from those shops as well.
Or what i like to do is order heaps of fish and when im ready to pay for them i pretend to spot out the painted fish then i ask in a rude voice "you sell painted fish??" when they say yes i say ok, dont worry the fish i dont want to buy them now.
It really bugs them.

Both my local pet shops sell dyed fish, and so does my local Walmart, on occasion. I would never buy a dyed fish, but considering the drive I'd have to make to get to any other pet shops (much less on that didn't carried dyed fish,) I'm not going to boycott these stores completely :p
I live in east Texas, where the practice of selling dyed fish is apparently not uncommon at all.
