Hey my pacu is about year old he/or she is in 55 gllon tank with a varieaty of other fish that get along well. So my wife added a few river rocks to the tank(where i'm from a river rock is a flat piece of granite and it sits on the bottom of the river) so since then the Pacu turns sideways and scracthes himself on the flat rock... he or she does it over and over again...... is this normal or is he or she hurting themselve??!!!! pacu's are hard to understand help me please

A pacu in a 55 gallon???? From what I remember they grow to about the size of a trash can lid!! How do you possibly have room for a pacu in a 55??!! Wow. wow. im shocked. Im really not trying to be rude but this is crazy. I mean even if its small a 55 gallon with other fish is still too small. Ok enough of my rant but I only hope you are buying a 300 gallon tank tomorrow and then it will probably outgrow that. A lfs by me keeps them in a 4000 (yes four thousand) gallon tank. To answer your question scratching doesnt sound good, a lot of fish scratch before they get ich or parasites. I would keep a close eye and post in the emergency section if anything goes wrong. Im sorry if I came off blunt but a pacu in a 55 gallon is pretty crazy my friend :hyper:

Did you boil the rocks first?

As a precaution I would take the rocks back out asap since it happened after this. Post this in emergency section where Wilder and co. can tell you what meds internal/external to get use for further precautionary measures. I don't know anything about meds having to never had to use them yet. You'll be in good hands there tho.

It's a sign of a parasite, it irritates the fish and it rubs on things to try and stop the itch.

If you go the rocks from an actual river, and didn't wash it, you probably have some kind of parasite.

Guys....we are talking about a PACU right??!! Am I the only one that thinks this is crazy for a 55 gallon??!!

No you aren't but I know they'll tell him there and I was figuring the pacu's health was first and foremost. You are right tho but it really isn't any different than an Oscar being in a 55g and many think that's ok. I don't want to pile on as I know many others will say the same thing.
I do agree with you tho.

Oh... I understand. I agree health is more important. I am not trying to come off like a fish preacher at all! But am I mistaken that their adult size is 3 feet?? An oscar would only get about 14 inches....I hope im not piling it on, I dont want to be rude. Ok, im done then, my vote is for a much larger tank :good: Good luck.

whoa whoa whoa.

poopseydrew was just trying to help. He wasn't talking to you about that but me and TFL who actually did forego mentioning you need a bigger tank. Please don't take it personal because noone knows what fish knowledge one has right off the bat. I can't think of anyone here that replies that doesn't love fish and want the best for them.

You're so mad that you didn't even bother to answer my questions. ;)

Let's all settle down, take a breath and try to get this right and save your fish shall we? :)

Hopefully, you'll at least take the rocks out right now and post in the Emergency Forum for further help. I wish you the best and hope to see your reply soon that everything is ok for your pacu. :good:

Agreed, Im settled now, I apologize if I acted silly. I do love fish and was obviously trying to help. Eskarr, No hard feelings held toward you. Just want to help you and your fish. Let us know how its going. Good luck.

Firstly, I agree... a Pacu should have a minimum of a 300gallon tank, secondly check your Ammonia levels as when fish scratch against rock it tens to mean high ammonia... I'd pull out the rocks, poor some vinegar on them and check if they fizz... if they do, then don't re-add them to the tank as they're not safe, and they may be effecting the water quality...

this is one, no where near fully grown...

Good luck,

id say a 8x5x5 Minimum.
