yes they can.

The black band on the top fin varies according to the location they are from in Lake Malawi. Some areas in the lake have them and some don't. I'm sure in the aquarium trade they've been interbred so it could be hard to tell for some specimens where that fish comes from. Last sentance IMO.

alright I was just being certain I didn't get a mixed breed. In a lot of pics of the socolofi they look more drab and were a solid color( pics of these fish just don't do them justice.) I have 3 the smaller two have egg spot and the larger one does not. They are only about two inches so I don't know how long before they are of breeding age.
 
I would guess that they'd be of breeding age when they start showing more blue. It's my understanding that they start out kind of a drab color and then brighten up as they mature.
