Good question?

I guess algae is like any other plant, so photosynthesis guide its existence, so I guess it does supply oxygen.

Except algae is not a plant, it's a protista and I know for sure some do take oxygen away and some give it out. I think the green algae consumes oxygen but there are lots of strains so it might just be some that do.

In the UK, several summers back, we had problems with some of our rivers which became so clogged up with 'blue-green' algae, and which effectively killed off most river fauna due to oxygen deprivation.

I am sure someone knows of this more than me.

Teelie's right in saying there are many types of algae out there, some provide oxygen and some take it.

As far as I know algae always photosynthesises to produce 'food', therefore it does give out oxygen during the day, although at night when photosynthesis stops it consumes oxygen in respiration.

kribsinvcrib you may be talking about eutrophication (sp?) this is a natural process speeded up by humans:
-fertilisers get into natural waterways
-causing massive algae growth
-these grow uncontrolably eventually killing each other
-causing a massive increase in aerobic bacteria to break the algae down
-which decrease the oxygen level in the waterway.

As you can tell, I know little of this area, but yes, what you have said is exactly what happened (then).

I knoew there was someone out there! :D
