i have a 54litre tank with ; 5 small platies , 1 bronze cory , 1 glass cat ( last of about 4 ) , 1 plec , and 3 red eye tetras. is this overstocked. if not i think i will repenish my glass cat numbers :fun:

well you need to reorganise the numbers of different fish really.

5 platies fine as long as there is only 1 male and the rest are females to aviod the male constantly stressing 1 female.
1 bronze cory, they need to be in groups of 5/6 preferably more.
1 glass cat your right a group of 6 i reccommend.
it all depends what sort of plec it is....
3 red eye tetra they need to be in groups of 6 as they are shoaling fish like the cories.

i think you should keep the platies if there is only 1 male and the rest are females and up the cory number to 6 get rid of the glass cat and the 3 tetra and i would probably not keep the plec if you don't know what species it is. i'm not sure if you could keep the tetra aswel as i'm not sure how over or understocked it would be with 5 platies and the cories.

:good:

The cories, dont need to be in groups of 6 or more.

They like company and should be kept with a few of their own species. 3 is minimum.

I would give the glass cat away somewhere.

everyone belives something else. some belive 3 like yourself some belive 5 i belive 6 like most shoaling fish are reccommend to be in 6's.

thanx ill try to get my act together when money crops up - i hope the local lfs will take the glass cat (its quite old). also theyre not actually red eyes . one of them is but it is always with the other two, i cant find the id of the other two and cant get a pic on but they have orange fins and a blue streak along their backs. theyr the same size and shape as the redeye

if their not red eye tetra then depending on what they are i would give them away aswel. as the red eye's like groups but so might the other sort which you can't ID.

:good:

I would get rid of the glass cat and the tetra's. Then everything should be fine. I think though, that for a 54 liter tank, that is a bit on the overstocked side. Least, it would be for me.

Orange fins and a blue stripe sounds like columbian tetras google it and check but thats what it sounds like if so i would say you are overstocked as they are a fairly big tetramine are about 2" and would just keep the platys and corys but beware of the platys being breeding machines

What type of plec is it? There are thousands of types of plecs, some only grow to 3-4inchs long while others grow over 3ft long.

i'm not sure whether its common or sailfin , but its brown with darker brown spots and quite large fins

and thanks yeah they are columbian tetras been trying to get id 4 ages thanks rusty

if it is a common or a sailfin you really do need to get rid of it as it will quickly outgrow your tank.

fingers crossed im gettin a 49 gal 4 ma birthday in july - would this be big enough

If it is a sailfin it'll need a 125gal (or a tank at least 5feet long and 2ft wide), if its a common (a similar but smaller species of plec) it will need at least a 55gal minimum- common and sailfin plecs grow an inch a month in their first year, so it may be just smaller enough for the 54litre depending on how large it is right now and you get a tank upgrade very soon, but you will need to upgrade you tank to more than 49gals.

(common plec)

i could of sworn common plecs get to 24inches (not like that website said 10inches) ??? and sailfins get to 18inches well mine got to 15inches before it caught a disease.
