Ive been told by multiple sources that i can overcrowd my african tanks to reduce teritorial aggression. Is this tue and how overcrowed are we talking becaue i have seen local dealers with 4-5 x's the correct amount

This belongs to african cichlids section.

They are supposed to be slightly overstocked to spred aggresion, with them it's not overcrovding but the meintenence. The more maintenance you do the more you can have of em. Of corse there is always a limit.

Also, the tank stocking in fish stores are simply holding tanks for trade, and should never be replicated at home, unless the tank is a display tank of course.

"Africans" covers a wide range of fish and different species will do better with different levels of crowding. There's also a difference between 'overcorwding' and 'overkill'. An Fella is right on, never look at tanks in the fish store as an example - even their display tanks, which are rarely long term and are maintained every day by employees.

dont think overcrowded, think slightly overstocked

hehe, what do you guys think about keeping a dwarf electrric eel in with africans (malawis) ive heard that its been done and it keeps the cichlids in line...
