Hi everyone. I have started up my first tropical tank, and started small (43L), so to start, got a Swordtail and a Platy, as they're easy to keep. Recently I have looked on the internet, and discovered my swordtail is a male, and the Platy a female. I have also found out that they interbreed. I have noticed a dark spot near the back of the Platy but am unsure whether it is pregnancy or not, but recall when I first introduced some chasing of the Swordtail to the Platy. They are full grown, and the Platy keeps hiding away in some "Caves" we bought shortly before setting up, and seems rather territorial. Is she about to give birth? My friend says she has gotten bigger, too. I also have a pair of Endlers in there and am aware they breed very quickly. What is the cheap solution to all my problems?!?!?

AAAAAAAAH!

Get a dwarf cichlid such as an apistogramma. Seeing as your tank is about 10 gallons that will fully stock your tank. The apisto will take care of any fry.

I also need to know about nets and how much ill it all cost and do I need another tank for the offspring as mine isonly 43L and how do I get them in another tank if that is the case and how long to leave them there and also, can I combine platy/swordtail fry with endler fry or not, will i need another tank with two seperate nets...?HELP!OK, so when I get the cichild, where do I put my four other fish? I would like to keep them, can I without getting a new tank? I don't really have the money for much...how much would a cichild cost? When would I be able to sell the fry?

The cichlid will eat the fry, you asked for the cheapest solution. If you want to grow out & sell the fry don't get the cichlid.

A tank doesn't have to be made of glass, get a large rubbermaid container for half the price. Sponge filters are the best thing for fry, add a heater & you have a growout tank for fry. You can combine the fry in the same tank/tub.

Im in the UK. and a baby as born. Only one. It was realy big. And now it died. What have I done wrong? IT WASN'T EATEN SO WHAT HAPPENED?

babies often die, was it just one that was born? normally they will have lots of babies at one time, some live and some die just because naturally some are stronger than others. However depending on your water conditions this can kill fish too, obviously adults are much stronger than babies so water quality needs to be immaculate for fry to cope with it. What are your stats for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?if you don't have a test kit then take a sample of water to your lfs and ask them to test it, write down the results and then post them here and we will let you know if anythings wrong.

amm: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 0.1
pH: 7.2
temp: 25.1 celsius

I only noticed the one fish, but they may have been born at night and the rest eaten. the mother is onyl 3 months.

anything wrong?
