i am currently cycling my tank, 15g/60L, it has 3 plants in it, going to get more soon and im putting some cycle plus in to help it go faster and fish food in to, my ideas of putting in the tank are:
3 honey gourami(1m and 2f)
5/6cherry barbs (cant decide on a number)
7 black neons
a few shrimp
does this sound overcrowded and what fish can i introduce 1st(after it has cycled)?

also how many cherry barbs would be best 5 or 6?
thanks alot for you time! :good:

Im not good on stocking, but a good website is www.thinkfish.co.uk go to community creator, add your tank and all the fish you want to put in it. It will tell you if your overstocked, or any problems relating to the types of fish. It will also tell you what PH, hardness temperature its best to keep it at.

As for barbs, imo I wouldnt have them. Ive had them before and always had problems with Fin nipping. But certainly if you are going to have them 6 or more is better as they are more likely to control themselves in a larger shoul.

Is it a 15 gallon high or a 15 gallon long..... I'd eliminate the barbs (to elminate overstocking, IMO) and I think you'll have a pretty, peaceful tank. :good:

I dont know if you are getting cherry barbs or not but i have them. They arent rly fin nippers like there tiger barb cousins. If you buy them, get atleast 4 or 5. You can easily see gender differences. The red ones are male and orange are female. In my tank i have 2 males and 3 females. My largest one is a female at 1 & 1/2 inches long.

I have a 96 litre with a couple of Otto and a couple of Cory extra but otherwise very similar in terms of my original setup. I had 3 Dwarf Gourami, wish I'd bought Honeys as they all died within 5 months. I'd say you are overstocked but with proper maintenance and a good filter should be OK, if you want to make it less work and probably have happier fish then get rid of one group of fish. Cherry barbs are lovely, I've never seen them nip anything I've had them in with and that includes the Gourami, Very small 1cm Rasbora and Shrimp.

I'd put the Barbs in 1st. 5 or 6 should be fine and I'd try and get more females than Males or at least equal numbers of each. Some people use them to cycle their tanks (me, oops) as they are pretty hardy and tolerant of a decent array of conditions.

Next would be the Gourami after a couple of weeks followed by the Neons a couple of weeks later.

Shrimp definately last. The least tolerant of changes in water parameters apparently.

The Gourami and Neons would both benefit from slightly acidic water, tha barbs won't really care and I'd do a bit of research on the shrimp and get ones that are suited to the actual water you have in your tank after adding the fish.

Mark

3 honey gourami =2"X3= 6"
5/6cherry barbs =2"X5/6= 10/12"
7 black neons=1.5"X7= 10.5"
a few shrimp =1"X3= 3"
=29.5"/31.5" so for what you want...you need at least a 30 gallon tank.
i'd recommend get rid of either your barbs or neons.
without one of those two groups...it's still crowded and overstocked
but it's not that bad.
