This may be a daft question but what would happen if i over stocked my fish tank?

To make a long story short - eventually you'll either have very stressed or dead fish

Depends TBH. Its generally OK to overstock a tad, especialy when you are better at fishkeeping. Obviously some cases of overstocking are not good, eg, an oscar in a 3 gallon. As said, it depends... 'how' you overstock.

If you are slightly overstocked, it can work if you do regular weekly water changes. My 20 gal (UK) is overstocked strictly speaking but i keep up the water changes without fail and test the water regularly and have never had a problem or lost a fish. However if you don't take these precautions, you will almost certainly lose fish.
