My 55 gall. is doing just yummy, and I'm a beleiver in 'if it ain't broken, don't fix it'. But, I'm also a curious creature, and have a spare hang-on (Aqua Care 150) filter that I'm curious about putting in the 55 gall. as well (as it's current Ehiem).

Brand names aside, point being, can you have 'too many' filters going?

I don't know why I am curious except, would it clean the water that much BETTER?
Or would it screw things up?

Any experience or knowlegable advice?

Thanks,

It wouldn't make a huge visual difference to the water I don't think, but it is always better to over filter than underfilter, plus you have a backup in place if one fails. 3 out of my 4 tanks run 2 filters on them for that exact reason!!

Thanks folks.

That's what I thought. I guess my only fear would be my own laziness kicking in! ("Oh, there's 2 filters, I don't have to change the water tonight..")

Bad den.

Depends really...you can over filter a palnted tank, and you can have too much current for the liking of certain fish.

However otherwise I dont think you can over filter.

If oyu were looking at a proper planted tank then you do not want an hourly turn over of much more than x3

Ive seen a over filtered tank.
A girl I know had a 10 gallon that had a filter that that was pumping like crazy. It seemed like her fish were constantly fighting the current.

To clarify, it wasn't really over filtered, but it was definitely cycling too much water considering the size and the fact there really wasn't anywhere for the fish to "hide" from the current.

As for your situation, it should cause no problem, and probably would be a good precaution for your tank.
