Over Crowding Is For Prisons Not Fish Tanks

Hey yall, My new 30 gallon tank has:

1 African Chiclid
3 Tiger Barbs
2 Red Swordtails
2 Yellow Swordtails
1 Common Plec.

maybe not overcrowded just yet but badly stocked for sure

the african ccichlid will need a much higher ph than the rest so won't be happy, also a lot of them are extremley agressive and not good community fish at all, I would advise you to re-home it.

the common plec can get to 12" long, and will need a much much bigger tank than 30g

tiger barbs can be very nippy so watch them with your swordies

Thanks for the info on the African. Thankfully I have a 10 tanks still up and running for him to go back to.

As for the Tigers, I was told that they would not bother any fish bigger than they were.

your a noob with 10 tanks?!?! lol crazy!

the african needs to be kept just with other african cichlids in a specialist set up. best to post in the african cichlids section of this forum for further advice.

tigers can be bullies, see how you go but just be warned there may be problems and if you spot any agression you'll have to re-home the tiger's/swordtails

i suspect you won't be able to keep the african at all, it'll be too big for the 10g, best to take him back to the store

if you keep your tigers in shoals of at least 6 they will quarrel amongst themselves and leave the rest alone

Tigers will also eat oranges. Well at least mine did. They loved it. You have to peel it of couse and put one little piece that you have to cut open. Its hard for them to get to the fruit otherwise.

im a bit surprised that no one has pointed out how huge a common pleco gets. 12+ inches. you should re-home him sooner than later so he has a good quality of life.
as mentioned, cichlids should stay in groups with other cichlids in a fairly large tank. maybe you can return him and the pleco and get a few more barbs. just my 2 cents.
