Hiya,

I have two otos in my community tank and I love them. In the last day, one has developed 'bloodshot' areas around his mouth area, it doesn't look very good to me.
Anyone got any ideas? I have looked but I can't find anything and I am worried!

Thanks

Not a very good pic as it's on my phone but it gives you an idea of the redness

Hi is this blood colour just around mouth or is it on gills as well?
if on gills could be down to high ammonia.
More info please or pic

Thanks for the reply :)

It's all around the mouth/gill area, I can't get a picture as he's attached himself to the vallis, I'm watching him for an opportunity though. Other than that, his behaviour seems normal and my other one seems absolutely fine as well.

Need more details about your tank, especially ammonia and nitrite levels.

I don't have a water testing kit at the moment but I have 2 dwarf gouramis who would be constantly at the surface if the ammonia was high. and the last water change was only 2/3 days ago so I don't think the nitrates will be high enough after that. Water changes are being done every 2/3 days at the moment. Besides, if it was something like that, wouldn't it affect both of them?

EDIT: Oh and he doesn't look agitated enough for parasites either!

Even if thats not the problem atm, its well worth the investment, knowing your stats can be important at all stages of fish keepig.

*Edit*

Just saw the pic and made me cringe, that looks like some serious ammonia poisoning!

well, i'll do a water change and get a kit tomorrow.

thanks for replying.

EDIT: sorry, just that if it was ammonia, would the other one be affected as well?

All fish will be affected, just not always as obvious :)

Ok, All the others seem perfectly fine though, no red gills on anyone! I'm not in work tomorrow anyway and we're planning a trip to a fish shop we haven't been to before so will pick up a testing kit then! Thanks for your help though :)

No worries :) dont take only my word for it by all means, im sure there's other explanations. Either way, a test kit is still worth it, so good call :)
