Are oscars known to eat mystery snails? I'm thinking that the oscar might be interested in one, but not actually crunch it up and eat it. What do you think?

I've had a mystery snail and an oscar at the same time before, but it was when the oscar was very small. Now that it's a foot long, I'm wondering if things might be different.

i think they'd probably give it a go!
do you think the oscar could actually crunch one up assuming it was too big to be swallowed whole? I think you are right about the snail finding itself in the jaws of the oscar, but what then?

No dout in my mind that the oscar would have a go at the snail. How big is the oscar and the snail? An small oscar could have a go at the fleshy body of the snail, but a big oscar would not have the dexterousness (?) to have a go a it. If the oscar was a big fully grown male it probably could crunch up a snail purely with brute force.

Sounds like my only chance would be to get a fully grown mystery snail and even then, maybe that wouldn't work since the oscar is a foot long and still growing.

i feed my small oscar quite large cichlid pellets and i can here him crunching them inside the tank, quality!! lol so ye he'll have the snail no probs lol

good luck

If were talking about mystery snails being apple snails, then a maximum size of 1.5" would probably mean there eaten. However, if you got a giant apple snail, one that grows to 3.5", then that may be a bit too much of a mouthful. Then again, depending on his intelligence and aggression levels, he (which at that size it must be) may use it as a toy and pick it up and swim about with it. This may cause some damage to the snail, and leave it disorientated and no dought unhappy. How is he with stones and decor, does he move them about a lot? How is he with other fish? I remember my Oscar used to pick a plec up in its mouth (gently of cource) if it got in its way and deposit it somewere else almost as a warning.

LOL

A gangsta Osca.

That almost makes me want one....not because they're potentially mean to tank mates, but because they sound very intelligent and full of personality.

My oscar is very very docile. It does not give any of its tankmates any aggression at all. Apparently, I got the nicest one on the planet, but then again it may be because the oscar has always had a lot of space. I keep my tanks understocked.

Because the oscar is a foot long, you can tell it is a male? I was expecting it to grow larger than that given it's in 350 gallon aquarium. Has it topped out already? The fish is only about 18 months old.

Yes, I believe the mystery snails I'm talking about are apple snails, and not the huge variety. Sounds like the snails are a no go.

Males usually grow bigger with bigger heads. Its growth may be slowing down now, at its current rate if it dident stop growing now he would be huge! I have never seen a foot long female, even with old breeding pairs, but I expect I can be proved wrong by someone. With Oscars the only realy way is when they breed and their build around the head.
