can u post a pic of it?

is it fungus?

don;'t think you need to be worried about the white edging to the fins, young oscars get this, think it's just where it's growing.

ammonia and nitrite should always be 0, if that's not possible like now then use water changes to keep them as under 0.25ppm. this may mean 80% water changes every day then that's what you need to do.

after each water change measure the stats 1 hr later, if they're not low enough then do another water change immediately, keep doing this until they are low enough.

if your friend has a tank then get some mature media from them to go into the filter which will help immensley, also try and buy soemthing like ammo-lock which reduces the toxicity of ammonia by converting it to ammonium which is still harmful but safer than ammonia and the bacteria can still feed from it.

open up the filter in the 30 gal, take no more than one third of whatever media you have in there, if you've something like a sponge this can just be cut down to size. replace the media you take with new stuff, won't matter if you can't do this for a few days but don't forget it!

keep the media wet with tank water, don't try to clean it or anything like that, then put it into the filter in the oscar tank asap, if you can't get it into the filter then put it in a mesh bag or something like that and hang it infront of the filter outlet, it needs lots of water flow through it to work so getting it into the filter is really the best option if you can make it fit.
