Has anyone Breed Oscars before or knows anything about this, What are the signs that i may have a pair and should i expect anything from them. I have two Oscars who do not leave each others side since the day i bought them. They do not fight, I only purchased two so i guess i got lucky? Any links storys or info would be greatly appreciated.

I have never bred them but I have information that i got in a book called "Breeding Freshwater aquariums*

Water conditions: hardness and ph not critical. Temperature should be between 75 and 80 F

Equipment: Minimum tank size is 125 gallons; tank twice that large would be better. Equip with filter, heater, and some large flat rocks that can serve as spawning sites. Gravel is optional they like pushing it around the tank.

Conditioning and Triggers: Condition seperatly for a week or two on feeder fish, earthworms, bloodworms, shrimp and/ or crayfish and other live foods. Gradually raising the temp to 84 degrees and do a large water change.

Brood Size: as many as 1500 :hyper:

Fry Care: Fry hatch in 2 to 4 days, and become free swimming about four days after that. Feed baby brine shrimp for the first week or so; then add daphnia and chopped tubifex. Oscar fry can eat crushed flake food, but that shouldnt make up the bulk of the diet. During feeding shut off the filter so it is easier to catch and/or locate food. Some Oscars eat there fry once they become free swimming and you may wish to remove them at that point.

Well good luck.

How big are they so far?

I had oscars that bred once. You may well have a pair but I can tell you that doesn't mean they'll breed. Before the ones I had bred they would lock jaws and push into eachother, swim in close to eachother and shimmy their tales ( though this is normal for non paired oscars as well), and they would dig in the gravel to the under gravel filter. I got a piece of slate rock and buried it where they were normally digging when I changed the water one day and once they dug down to it, and cleaned it off with there jaw ( another pissble sign of breeding) they laid the eggs. If you see any of those signs you may have fry eventually. Hope this helps.

They are about 6 inchs and for about 5 months shared a 20 until i bought this tank last weekend. They are showing no signs but im curious because they dont seem to be fighting yet. Also It looks as if they have/had hole in head at one point in time. They look healthy but one of them has a dent on the top if his he about the size of a coffee stirrer. The other has one on his cheek, I dont know what it is if its hole in head if its something to be concerned about, They are small holes and the fish look healthy. Any Ideas? Could they have had it in the past and be recovering?
