immature oscar owners rant

Ok, so oscars are cool looking fish and can live a long time. I understand they eat other animals like small fish or shrimp and such.
But if you look on youtube, really sick people are feeding their oscars LIVE foods such as bettas, mice, hamsters, chicks, rats, frogs, finches, newts, and whatever else can fit in their mouth.

First, most live fish you buy cheaply can be ill, so feeding them as a staple to your oscar will only be bad for your oscar. Second, half of those foods are way too large and nobody ever thinks that a fish can choke on a large food item. Than, having a fairly large live animal drowned or being torn apart by fish is not cool, that's torture. And wth is with feeding bettas? Those are beautiful fish why pay $5 and feed it to your oscar, I dont get the thrill people partake in this? Honestly except for guppies that are not diseased I would buy frozen foods they are safer and cleaner and you can get them in bulk.

I'm not saying that every oscar owner does this, but it's like a trend now that your "cool" to have an oscar and feed it live animals for fun and tape it. Boys as young as 10 I saw doing this, oscars should really be sold to only older people, treat them like if you wanted to buy a piranha, you woudln't sell that to a kid!

so let me get this right its less harsh to feed guppys than a betta to an O ?
did I understand properly ?
scot :)

Oh boy, I knew this was going to happen.
Ok, it's not good to feed any live foods really for disease risk and suffering of the animal.

and yes feeding an ornamental fish to something defies the meaning of "pet" not "feeder fish", it's a waste of money when frozen foods are cheaper and you could be feeding something to your fish that someone would like as a pet instead.

My point is that not only fish are fed to oscars, other animals too, and it doesnt make sense why. Oscars dont need live prey, heck even for snakes now people buy frozen mice instead of live feeding, it's safer.

Don`t tar us all with the same brush! ( i know you say you realise we dont all do it.. but do you, really),some of us would never dream of feeding our beautiful oscars live food for the hell of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
live feeder fish hold little or no goodness for them, and even if i wasnt squeemish,, i wouldnt/couldnt do it

dunno about them being the new pirhana tho... all mine have been daft as brushes.

here we go again. another pointless thread.....
agreed, you owe me the 2 minutes of my life i wasted reading this thread back.
+1

Just because you don't think it is right doesn't mean others don't it's a matter of opinion, also feeders can be gut loaded with certain foods so that the fish is getting the nutrition.

can I just ask, are you a vegetarian?

what i really want to know is...can an Oscar really fit a chicken in its mouth?!?!
