We are going away next weekend for a caravan rally from fri to mon - despite all my best intentions I can't take my oscars with me! I was just wondering if I need to make arrangements to have them fed by someone as I can see one of these so called "vacation blocks" lasting a few seconds. Next month we are away for a whole week - my neighbour isn't around - are these automatic fish feeders you see advertised any good? thanks for your help - scrufts

p.s. I must be getting to be a confirmed fish nut as I was thinking about cancelling the rally and staying at home with the fish! :good: (much to the disgust of OH- "are you married to me or those bl**dy fish?")

The Oscars should be fine without food for 3 days. I have left small fish for a week without food. Larger fish like Oscars can live for upto 3 weeks without food quite easily. As long as you feed them plenty now (which I'm sure you do) then they should be fine.

If you are going for a week, get a trusting friend to come and feed them once evry 2-3 days.

The Oscars have enough body fat to keep them going for a while! They will be fine for the few days and the week without being fed, but for longer hoildays they should be fed more.

thanks for all the help - will consider "training" a nearby neighbour up for the future and also will keep my fingers clear of their tanks when I return as they are lively at feeding time so a few days absence will put my fingers at risk!

I've left for 4 days without feeding any of my fish
they were all fien and very very very very happy to see me upon my return! :p

Don't worry about your fish, he'll be just fine without food for a few days

I suppose that the more consistant advice you get, the better you will feel about leaving you fish for a few days so... I wouldn't hesitate to leave a healthy oscar for a few days, even a week.

Go enjoy your rally, an oscar will be fine for at least a week without food. Replicating the dry & rainy seasons of the Amazon is a method used to induce fish to spawn, it starts with dropping the water level, turning up the heat, and withholding food. Check out http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/breedi...%20seasons.html
for a more detailed explaination.

I have done this before to induce fish to spawn, two weeks without feeding doesn't harm a healthy fish.

Thanks for all the advice, it is very encouraging. as you can gather I am getting very attached to my Oscars ("Buster" Red Oscar,"Oddjob" Tiger Oscar) My biggest regret is that i didn't get some earlier. I also have to contain myself when at the Local aqaurium shops - otherwise I would end up with loads of them!

Yup,fish can live without food for ages...Just
some more reasurence!(SP)
