Africans are wonderful fish to keep, plenty of movement and color. Wait, I get that from a disco ball, too. lol ;)

Seriously, nothing against africans, mbuna or otherwise (I've kept plenty), but to me the NW fish are so much more interesting to watch and keep. This is just my own opinion, but the africans are somewhere between NW's and dithers. Yeah, they are cichlids, but just barely. :fun: :fun: :fun: I did have a colony of daffodil brichardi several years ago that were stunning to look at. Living art. They just didn't have the "personality" to keep my attention. It's all about your taste, mine goes to CA's and SA's.

btw... how are mbuna "better" than an oscar? Or did you mean "better to me"? ;)

In the 34 gallon, as suggested, meeki would be fine. Any of the Archocentrus genus (now called Cryptoheros) would be good, too. That includes convicts, spilurum, sajica, etc.

redgold.... nothing against you but I would like to know where you have seen that the archocentrus have been reclassified to cryptoheros? I know that they are reclassifing all the time it seems like they get bored so they decide to do it, it is more for my information than anything else

Let me clarify myself.... I can't say for sure all Archocentrus are now Cryptoheros, but I know some have been changed. Try a google search for the name and see what you get.

This gives a clue: http://www.cichlidae.com/articles/a205/default.php

I'm not going to pay for that article, but just the title is enough.

Edit: wish I could spell correctly the first time. And the second time. Third time is the charm.

 What????????????? dither fish
They have incredible amounts of personality all of mine are substantially unique very intelligent, plus wicked quick, so i can see that as a plus for NW if you prefer the slow floaty type fish
Now i relize and admit i have not kept any New Worlds but, my mbuna have plenty of personality and im sure they could equal a oscar in that regards, then beat it with there imense activity and wonderous coloration
Of course IMO

There ya go! say anything you want, just qualify it! lol

And it's big of you to admit you haven't kept any NW's. Not many would do that... but then again to make comparisons against something you have no experience with... hmmm.... just poking at ya to make the point :p . Really, you should try some NW's and see what you think. No reason not to keep both if you have the space and money.

Slow and floaty? lmao!!! that's funny, but far from accurate. :p

 yes lol slow and floaty- ha :p I have read up a little so done a bit of research on the newworlds so Im not complete no-nothing, and the IMO was an edit to keep things friendly although it's all hardcore FACT :fun:

Oh and i have no space and no money :/ but i like that thinking, would want to get some jaguars

no worries... all in fun. Here to learn, ya know? Jags are an awesome fish. Need a minimum 75 gallon for a single adult male. A healthy male jag will almost glow with yellows and purples under all those jag spots. Gorgeous. And they are quite fast, too! More than capable of easily catching small schooling fish as snacks. :p

Not always true!!!

I have an adult pair of gold jags in a 70 gallon that spawn every 4-6 weeks.

In fact, they are fanning a new clutch of eggs right now!!

It really depends on the individual fish!!

you are so right! I broke my own rule and didn't qualify my post. Should have said something like "in general" or "as a general guide". Fact is, even a pair of jags can do ok in a 55 for quite some time if no aggression issues arise.

btw CM, I know of you from a few other sites (including yours), and I most definitely respect your opinion above the huge majority. ;)

I appreciate the compliment given some of the company we keep at one of those other sites, redgold!!!

It took some digging, but I finally figured out who you are ;) ;)

Lovely firemouth!!! :p :p

redgold... I went into cichlidae.com and searched through their articles and found one ver simmilar to the one that you linked to that you don' t have to pay for    while it does appear that they did reclassify some of the species in the genus Archocentrus, it was only a select few that shared similarity to spilurus that were affected the guy that came up with the new classification chose spilurus as his type species... but here is the article that I found.... in this case the spinos were spared so there for it is still safe to call them by the genus archocentrus.
