So last night i walked out in to the kitchen where lucifer's tank is turned on the lights
in the room opened the top of his tank and BAM he FREAKS swimming back and forth
at the top of the water like he was gasping for air it was really wierd. I thought he was
going to jump out of his tank. He was back to normal after about a mintuie other then
the buise he got on his head from banging in to the filter tube.
Other then that he is a normal fish.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause this?

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP

Oscars learn quickly how their food gets to them and they are very enthusiastic at feeding time. Your Oscar thought he was going to get fed. You must not be the person who normally feeds him? You should notice this behavior every time you get near the tank and especially if you open the lid of the tank.

You spooked him when he was resting. This has happened to me with fish before. Fish are most vulnerable when they are resting/sleeping (what ever you want to call it) so when they are quickly awakened by an unknown being it is instinctive to try to escape as quickly as possible. Your oscar probably saw you moving and didn't know what you were, so tried to escape.

I agree

Have you ever spooked an Oscar before? I have one and he is so easy going, he will let me reach right through the top of the tank and touch him on the top of his body ahead of the dorsal fin. I must admit I have never flipped the lights on in the room at night and then opened the top of the tank, but I doubt he would freak out, he would most likely start his normal begging behavior and thrashing around waiting for his food.

Going from dark to light probably spooked him good.. I know I don't like it when I'm sleeping and the curtains get opened and sun goes right into my eyes.. oscar probably felt the same~

No, I haven't spooked an oscar, but I have spooked other large cichlids (Severums, Uarus) and it is definitely not good ;)
