What is the min amount of gallons for a full grown oscar? I've heared it's 55 min, but i think it would fit in a 46. Please help me.

A lot of places say minimum 55g, but IMO I don't think that is big enough. Most 55g are 4ft long and 12-14" wide. that's not really enough room for a full grown Oscar to turn in. a 46g is probably 48(l)x12(wide)x18(ish)(deep) and that is definately not big enough. IMO with Oscars (and any big fish really) it's less about how many gallons, and more about the footprint of the tank; and for an Oscar I would say you need at the very minimum 48" long and 18" wide. Sorry!!

So basicly a 46 gallon bowhead tank isn't big enugh? Because I was thinking of getting one, but now I know it's too small :byebye:

sorry, oscasr wont have enuff space in those tanks

but you could always get Jack Dempsys :D

I was thinking about getting a pair of Electric Blue Jackdempsys, would a 46 gallon bowhead be enough for them?

Just FTR, my 46g bowfront is 36" wide by 18" high and the front is approx 15" deep.

Nah I don't think it's big enough. Mine is 36" by 12" by 18".

I have heard of people keeping an oscar in a 29 gallon. That was with daily water changes and double filtration though.
Regardless of that, I don't think that would be a comfortable environment for the fish. Very bad idea IMO!!!!

Yup, just because a fish can live under certain conditions does not mean it is in the right environment. It becomes a question of whether you want a big fish just floating around in an empty tank much to small, or if you would rather create a proper environment for a more appropriate fish.

A pair of Firemouths or Nicaraguas would do nicely, for example (not to mention how much nicer they are then Oscars  ) :)

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll see if maybe a 55 gallon would work.

Ha! Much nicer! My firemouth is very aggressive, much more so than my oscar. My firemouth bit holes through the bag when I was bringing it home from the pet store. I had to stop at a different pet store and beg for a new bag to put the fish into!
