Little Rusty is settling in really well and he is just adorable, however I am a little worried about him eating. He is eating absolutely anything I put into the tank :hyper: but he seems to chew his food and then expell loads out of his gills? I have read up on Oscars before I had him and it does say they are messy eaters, so is this normal feeding or is Rusty having problems? He does have a nice fat tummy so something is going in the right direction.

Perfectly normal hon, they are very messy, they chew it, half of it comes out the gills, usually they stuff so much in there to start with its the only place for the excess to go  Try adding less at a time, but feed more often, but it will still happen. When I feed Tigger its like a food snow shower in the tank, the other fish though, go around picking up his leftovers.

Phew thanks hun, so long as he is ok! Its getting a mess in the tank with putting stuff one end for the TF and Syno, food in the middle for the angels, leaving me the other end to put in something for Rusty and hand feed tich (the birchir) Peas went down very well :good: pea soup by the time he had finished spitting it all over the place

the trouble with oscars is they will constantly eat untill they die they really dont care so make sure you feed in moderation and also spitting out the gills is normal my plecs love it because he grinds all the food down for them

Would not keep Angelfish with Oscar(s). Might work for a while if Oscar is juvenile and Angelfish are larger , but as the Oscar grows and matures,I would not be surprised if it turns on the angelfish.
Synodontis and Birchir would stand far better chance.

Boris is exactly the same. The other fish with the smaller mouths love it though as he breaks the food up for them  He even chews up the carnivore pellets he doesn't like. Don't know why he keeps eating them when he doesn't like them, but the other fish do and seem grateful
He will eat until he physically can't get anymore in his gob, then float around looking like a tool, gradually expelling some from his gills until he can close his mouth and chomp down the rest. Then straight back looking around for more food

:good: I do know angels and oscars dont mix, the tinfoil, birchir and syno I am only fishy sitting, they go to their new home on Wednesday. The angels are up for re-homing they are full grown and Rusty is terrified of them at the moment, hopefully the angels will be re-homed soon.

Its so weird non of my other fish seem to belch out food like he does, I guess this is the joy of being a new oscar keeper

My apologies with regards to questioning the Angelfish and Oscar mix. Some less knowledgeable, might see that and assume that the two would get along.Funny the Oscar seems terrified at the moment but I can relate.
Have an approx seven inch Electric Blue Dempsey that hasn't a clue that guppy fry are edible. I thought perhaps that I could thin out some of the guppies by occasinally offering them to the jack, but the half dozen I placed in the tank nearly four months ago, are still swimming round the tank AND reproducing
Nearly half the food offered to Oscars and other large cichlids I have kept passed through the mouth, and out through the gills and is for that reason that lots of filtration and large water changes are needed in my opinion to keep water quality from having detrimental effect on fish.
Have found that cichlids in particular do best with nitrates no higher than 20 ppm and filter(s) capable of filtering 6 to 8 times the volume of water the tank holds per hour.
Less filtration, resulted in more frequent water changes.
I try to change 50 percent each week, and clean mechanical media frequently. Is same care I give the dempsey that I have kept since it was two inches long.
Hope you enjoy your Oscar and mind you not to place fingers too close when feeding.

Yep Im picking those fish up Wednesday :) The angels will be fine whilst they are not edible size and until Rusty reaches a size where upon hormonal territory issue arise, all dependent on what sort of personality he grows up to have.

No need to apologise, as you say some people dont know so its always worth saying. My cichlid tanks get a wc twice a week, filters and plastic plants cleaned once a month the tank cleaning shedule is on my kitchen cupboard  . As for keeping my fingers out the tank no chance I love hand feeding my fish  got a few bite marks now from the Texas though.

Yes, oscars are extremely messy. Feeding was always followed by a cloud of particles coming from the gills. I think oscars could even exceed even plecs with the about of waste they produce.
