hi all. i was just wondering if a 48" x 16" x 18" will be sufficiant for an adult oscar. im not so much worried about the length or height but is 16" deep sufficiant? tank size 55us gallons 48 uk. :S

come on people 21 people have viewed and not 1 reply.(that was said in a nice way) is 16" front to back to small coz the first person who replied, i think they thought i meant 16" height

You're going to get different opinions, so let me clear this up. The general school of thought is that 55 gallons is absolute minimum for an adult oscar, but 75 gallons and up is a thousand times better. With a 55 the fish is going to be pretty cramped and you'll need a ton of filtration, but it is doable. In my opinion, so long as you're not just dead-set on getting an oscar, I'd go for something a little smaller for a tank that size. I have my oscar in an 80 gallon and he looks a ton happier and is a lot more active than the grown oscar in a 55 gallon at my LFS (and yes, that oscar is very well cared for too, he's the owner's pet).

I keep mine in a 90 gallon with clown loaches

the thing with the 55 is that you won't be able to keep anything else as you'll find a 2 inch oscar is really messy! Mine makes more mess then all my community fish together in the 20 and 50 gallon tanks when he eats. Over half what he eats he spits out!

They are adorable however and very entertaining :)

I've had mine only a few days now and wouldn't trade him for anything

ok. so i cant get a oscar  . im having a 55 gallon aquarium,so what to get? any suggestions. oh and does any1 know anything about a synspillus (red head cichlid) and how do i get onto the sell, swap buy thing that sum1 to;d me about yesterday. thanks every1
:)

48" x 16" x 18"
A 55 gallon 48x12 footprint. this tank is a 60 gallon that has a footprint of 48x16. These are different tanks.

it isn't rubbish. Freddy is simply telling you that from the tank demensions you gave the volume of the tank is more than 55 gallons.

An online converter I used said it is nearly 60 gallons, yes.

oh ok.so 60 gallons...

does any1 know anything about green terror cichlid or synspilus?

you could actually keep ONE oscar, and nothing else, in this tank! (48x16 would be ok)
it will bring out contreversy here but i've seen many people succesfully keep oscars in 48x12 setups. just keep one and only one!

just get a nice canister filter and a big power filter :)
