Hey
im just a bout to get my 75 gallon tank it will have an oscar in it

I was told by something that it is not good to have oscars in a tank with a carbon filter, is the alternative foam???

Does foam work???

here is a link to the filter i Might get

Link to filter

is it good

I was thinking of getting the 110 gallon one with 428 GPH so i could over filter

Tell me what u think

Thanks

You dont need carbon in the filter. All it does is take out meds and clears the water up.

I would suggest an external filter like fluval or ehime for a messy fish like an oscar.

Carbon is used for chemical filtration. It has been tied to HITH in some studies with cichlids. Some people swear by it, saying it gives them crystal clear water. Many others, myself included, don't use it unless medications need to be removed. Many medications are chemicals, so the carbon removes them.

Oscars are messy fish, requiring multiple filters. Aqua Clears filters are one of the best hob filters you will find, but like most hob filters, they excel at mechanical filtration while being a little deficient in bio filtration. This is due to the gph moved vs quantity of media.

Canister filters excell at bio filtration, once again, due to the gph vs media. Most people who keep large messy cichlids like oscars use multiple filters, usually a canister which is set up for bio filtration, and a hob, which is set up for mechanical filtration. That means foam & floss in the AC 110, and ceramic media in the canister.

An alternative to the canister, which can get expensive (Eheim) would be a couple of large air driven sponge filters. These provide excellent bio filtration on a budget, and would give you some time to get the money together for a canister.
