hey guys,

over the past few days my oscar has been acting a bit silly. he has been sucking in air from time to time as tho he was trying to eat it. i feed him two to three times a day so i dont believe he his hungry. also when he does do it and i do feed him he swims to the bottom and does not eat his food. normally when i feed he swims right to the time and happily eats what i give him. has anyone seen their oscar do this or have any idea why hes doing it?

thanks,
crazybob

not sure i get what you mean by sucking in air? how is his appetite , is he feeding normally? is he pooping well? does he look bloated?

One of my oscars will "chase" air bubbles on the surface and bite them gulping in air occasionally, but no matter what time of day I drop food in he eats it. Both my greedy oscars would probably eat all day!

hes eating normally, which isnt a lot and never has been. i feed him twice a day until he is no longer wanting food (usually near 20 pellets). hes pooping fine and he does not look bloated. ive never seen a pickier eater than bashful in a fish before lol. im guessing hes just doing it out of boredom? i dont notice anything wrong with him or anything and hes still eating what he eats when he wants to eat.

Oscars are such characters, if he is eating and generally everything else is ok, it sounds to me like it is something he just likes doing. One of mine loves headbutting the intake strainers, he is covered in scratches again this morning and both intake pipes are hanging off the suckers.

doesnt sound like anything to worry about imo. as star said oscars can be quirky fish. my 2 will often swim up to the surface , see there reflections and jump to attack the "intruder" if your fish is eating normally etc and isnt losing weight or anything i would just keep doing what youre doing .
