Well, my B-day is next Wednesday, the 12th, and I ordered a few books from amazon.

1. Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants by Peter Hiscock (His last name is rather fun, isn't it?)
2. Aquarium Fishes of the World by Herber Axelrod

Both of these books received good reviews from Amazon buyers, and they are hardcover and rather nice. Anybody have these books and can comment on them?

Just curious. WOW, I think this is my shortest starting topic to date! :) I am making an effort to be less verbose. :)

i'm not familiar with either of the books but let me know how the aquarium fishes book is. i've been wanting to get a fish encyclopedia of sorts but am hesitant to buy it online without seeing it first.

Sounds good
Did you know, buying books off amazon supports TFF

Sorry...I don't mean to be negative, but, I have Axelrod's large book. It has great pictures, but, the index is horrible. It is not easy to find fish in the back. Many times he will not list more than one species name in the back. Perhaps it is a newly updated edition. For example, if you know that an iridescent shark is of the species pangasius, you can find it in the index. However, good luck looking up an 'iridescent shark'. It's not there. If you look up German ram, it is not here. You have to know it is ramirezi microgeophagus. Was extremely disappointed with the organization. Great pix tho'. BTW, I could'nt find the edition date in the front of the book. JMO. SH

I was going to note the link at the bottom of the page but I forgot it was changed to Google, then I noticed that Google was gone....

no ads???

hmm who will it be next

Thanks for the imput. Steelhealr I wasn't aware of the problem with the index. It was never mentioned in the reviews. Thank you for letting me know, I appreciate it. I don't think it'll anything more than a mild annoyance for me.

No DD, I didn't know I was supporting TFF by buying from Amazon. Well, I guess I've been supporting TFF for a long time, because I've always used Amazon to purchase things online.

The Baensch atlas series are far better, the "Photo Index" volume being particularly useful to quickly look things up. The info is alot easier to digest and its generally better laid out.

Having said this, the Axelrod book is still quite comprehensive.

Another good one is the Bede Atlas of Freshwater Aquarium Fishes. Its expensive, £70+, but is VERY comprehensive (8000+ pictures) and generally provides good information with multiple pics of some species (male / female or adult / juvinile).

by Peter Hiscock (His last name is rather fun, isn't it?)
Hahaha, I wouldn't have noticed that if you hadn't quoted it... Both names combined make it all the funnier
I bet he was tormented in grade school.

And that is why despite all the recommendations other books that I'm sure are much better, I'm getting those two. To have books written by Hiscock and Axelrod makes a crummy index worth it. If only Amazon would hurry up and ship already so I can have the book written by Hiscock. Yeah, I bet they were tormented as little children, but if they weren't then would they have become experts in their respective fields in aquaria?

Not a great lover of Axelrod books or (TFH publishing) I find the pictures mediocre and the text mostly uninformitive. Lots of gloss but little substance for the money. This is only my opinion. IF its pictures for reference your after then the Aqualog series of books are a great help. Beanch atlas's are also excellent buys.

Hey, shipping was taking forever, I ordered some pretty funky Renaissance Music CDs that were holding up shipping quite a bit and basically canceled the order. Bad news, it'll be a belated B-Day present, but good news, I'll get more stuff and can rearrange my order a little. For the curious, I got Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree by U2 and some very obscure Renaissance CDs. I have very eclectic tastes in music. But that's a separate order and off-topic.

Ok, so after mulling it over, I am considering breaking the Hiscock Axelrod pair and will consider the Baensch Atlas. Problem is that I'm terrible with books and would really prefer a hardcover, or rather my puppy is terrible with books and has a harder time destroying hardcover. :p Also, do I have to get all 4 volumes, or will volume 1 suffice for now? Eventually I'd like to have them all, but right now, that doesn't seem financially feasible. I've never kept any of the very funky species. I'll see, maybe I can pull some strings. Oh, and FYI, the Bede Atlas is out of print and the author doesn't want to print anymore. That's really unfortunate, because it seems like a dream book. :-(

Ok, here's what I ordered, and too late can't take it back, but feel free to yell at me for making a wrong decision :p

1. Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants by Peter Hiscock (His last name is rather fun, isn't it?) Hardcover
2. Baensch Atlas of Freshwater Aquarium Fishes (Volume 1) Hardcover
3. Labyrinth Fish: The Bubble Nest Builders by Horst Linke, Hardcover (May be a waste, but it got very good reviews and was only $3.50 for a hardcover, and covers many of the rare species of anabantoids. I thought it was useful since I spend a lot of time at the betta boards).

Let the criticism commence! I had loads of fun ordering and only spent a little more than I thought I was going to. I'm glad all the books are hardcover too, CiCi will have a more difficult time destroying them. She has made a lovely pile of toilet paper just for me to clean up in the hall. She is so considerate.

:bday: :band: :drink: :- :-

Yeah, I love getting presents!

Good choice, better than Axelrod. Bensch atlas's are great.
