Right, I've placed my order with Trimar. It wasn't quite as I expected as he could only do me male-female pairs, which wasn't, obviously, what I wanted. Still, after humming and ha'ing for a long time, I decided to go for it, as he hinted that he might never be able to sell them in any other ratios, and I know nobody else does them. I'll keep an eye on them and if Mr Superfluous makes a nuisance of himself, he'll have to go and live with the platies.

Anyway, it is quite exciting- this is the first time I've bought online, and not only an individual fish that I haven't inspected, but a species I have never seen in real life. What if I don't like them? What if they don't me?

The really really seriously nerve-racking thing is that I got carried away and went and ordered 4 peacock gobies, though I had firmly decided to wait with those until the autumn. I though I wouldn't be taking the limias, and I wanted to start stocking the tank with something (currently only has bristlenoses in it) . And then I changed my mind about the limias and didn't have the guts to cancel the gobies...The man swore blind that they are eating dry food and doing really well- what if they don't in my tank? I think I might just hide under the table tomorrow when the courier comes.

The other thing that scares me is that the tank seems so massive- how are any of my fish ever going to find their food in there? Ok, I know this is irrational, I know they manage it in the Amazon, and in whatever New Guinean river the gobies hail from, but I am very tired (matron at the ballet's schools dress rehearsal yesterday- supposed to finish at 7, me and daughter staggered out of theatre at 10. 30)- and I'm beginning to wonder if I've been a bit rash. Ordering fish, I mean. I KNOW I was rash promising to be a matron.

Sorry not all of this is relevant to the livebearers forum, but you might reassure me by your interest in the limias.

you're gonna have some problems if you have more than 1 male-female pair. ITs better in trios or keep 1 male only and hte rest females.

I've tried to keep common livebeareres such as swordtails in a 55 gallon tank. 2 males, 20 females. One male still fought the other and killed him.

Meepster, I do know these things- but when you order rare livebearers you may not be able to stipulate exact ratios. As it turned out, TriMar were unable to get me black limias in mixed genders- so I ended up with porthole livebearers (poeciliopsis gracilis) instead. Monty persuaded me to get 2 male, 4 females- as he pointed out, if something happened to the single male, I would never be able to get a replacement, you don't see portholes around every day. I think this was wise advice, and am glad I took it. Have observed very little aggression between the males, though they court the females non-stop. One female has died (birthing problems)- but I have 6 healthy fry, and the adults do not appear interested in eating them.
Anyway, swordtail males are known to be particularly aggressive to each other, compared to most other common livebearers.
