I am about to stock my 40g tank with some fish but the question is -
Do I add all the fish at once, or do I add one species first followed by another species a week later followed by another a week later?

Any clues?

Chris

That depends on some things. Did you do a fishless cycle or is the tank uncycled? What kind of fish do you plan to stock?

Fishless cycle.
Am planning on Clown Loaches, small Catfish species and Angelfish.

If you went with one of the typical fishless cycles then you will have more bacteria then you need to fully stock the tank, should you wish to, and I'd say it's a good idea to go for it. If you add only a few fish the bio-filter you've worked at building up will shrink down to accommodate only those few, and then you will face little mini-cycles (although it's really just the bacteria catching up) each time you add more fish.

fishles cycle means full steam ahead with stocking.....

though it might be an idea to add all but one srt of fish.....then add the last lot a week later.

in case the water throws a wobbly!!

I'm presuming you're moving some fish from your 10g (in particular the angel)

You can use your 10g to help kickstart your cycle for the 40g. If you put the filter media in the 10g for a while before putting it in the new tank then it will only have enough bacteria to cope with the fish in the 10g

I wouldn't add clown loaches personally as they are too big for a 40g IMO.
