I recently acquired a group of 5 neon tetras and I immediately noticed that one of them was more orange and had a greenish stripe. I asked the sales clerk and she said that it was probably younger than the others but it was actually the largest one! I was just wondering why it was this strange color and whether or not it is a sickness.

could it be a stressed black neon?

100% not a normal neon as they show their colours from a very young age and will fade when stressed. black neons however have a green line instead of blue.

Maybe it is a different type of tetra. You sometimes get them mixed up in the LFS tank. I don't think it's an illness.

best thing to do is post a pic of it and we can help a bit more without guessing

Aphyocharax rathbuni, a Bloodfin Tetra relative, perhaps?
