Hi guys,

Just a quickie please. One of my female guppys appears to have a frayed tail. She looks healthy, no other signs of illness at all, swimming fine and eating but she has very slight fraying on her tail. Also I have 7 neon tetra's, 1 when I got it from my LFS had part of it's tail missing and the tail looked frayed, now 2 others have the same thing. I've had all these fish for other 2 months now.....do you think they are just bullying each other and fin nipping or could it be fin rot?

Thanks in advance guys.

p.s my stock in total is 2 Mollies, 2 Opaline Gourami, 7 neon tetras and 7 guppies (3 female, 4 male - I have a nursery with 12 fry in right now, most will be given away but any females I get will be kept to balance out the girl/boy ratio, as 2 of the males developed from 4 fry that were in the bag when I brought the females) and a plec. Tank size is 125L (uk) and all watwr stats are fine : Amonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nirate 25ppm, PH 6.4, temp 26'c constant.

Thanks guys x

Hello :)
I believe mollies have been known to nip the fins of fish with long flowing tails, so that could be the problem.
I have a tetra serpae that has been nipping my guppies so I'm exchanging him today... don't want my guppies getting fin rot. :C
Your fishies tails will be fine :) Just do a 20% water change once a week and add in some Stress Coat and keep an eye on them ^_^
If things get worse and they do develop fin rot, take them out of the tank and put them in a separate one if you have one, and treat them with melafix.
(and do not put melafix or other treatments in a tank with fish that don't need it)

I hope this helps! :)

Thanks Proud, appreciate the reply. I already do 25% water changes once a week or more if necessary (I had a bacterial bloom a week ago, pain in the bum but did changes daily, it's now cleared up!). I'll keep an eye on them, they all act fine, swim round happily, when I try to net them they are like the wind! lol So I don't think they are ill......I'll just have to watch out for the bully......thanks again x

Picture of my tetra and their tails.

Sorry here it is, forgot to push the attach button! D'oh!

Sounds like you're doing all the right things then! :3
If they're acting like they usually do then that's good. :) You can usually tell if the fish has fin rot because their fins/tails will look very different
Hopefully they'll stop picking on the poor guppy :p
I'm not sure if this will help, but you could always try putting the bully in an isolation tank for a while  or a breeding box if you have one, they also double as an isolation box :p
